Two Routes to Funding Farm Equipment
When a farming business needs to fund a significant equipment purchase, two main options present themselves: specialist agricultural finance (HP or lease) arranged through a broker, or a traditional bank loan. Both have merit in different circumstances, and the best choice depends on the amount required, the urgency, the business's relationship with its bank, and the preferred security structure.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Factor | Agricultural HP / Lease | Bank Business Loan |
|---|---|---|
| Decision speed | 24–48 hours | 2–6 weeks |
| Security required | Asset only | Often requires land charge |
| Deposit required | 10–30% typical | Variable |
| Rate competitiveness | Specialist lenders - very competitive | Good for strong borrowers |
| Flexibility of repayment | Seasonal structures available | Usually monthly fixed |
| Tax treatment | AIA on HP; full rental deduction on lease | Interest deductible only |
| Impact on bank relationship | No impact - separate facility | Uses bank credit lines |
| Application complexity | Streamlined - asset focused | Full financial due diligence |
When Agricultural Finance Wins
Specialist agricultural HP or lease finance is generally preferable when: speed is important (seasonal deadlines, limited dealer stock); you want to preserve bank credit lines for working capital; you do not want to charge land as security; or you are seeking seasonal repayment structures not available from your bank.
When a Bank Loan May Be Preferable
A bank loan may be more appropriate when: you have a strong existing relationship with a bank offering excellent terms; the amount required is very large and a bank's pricing is clearly superior after full comparison; or the finance is for a non-standard purpose that specialist lenders will not fund as an equipment facility.
