Second-Hand & Used Farm Equipment Finance

Everything you need to know about financing pre-owned tractors, combines, and specialist agricultural machinery.

Financing Used Farm Machinery

Used and second-hand farm equipment represents excellent value for many farming businesses - a two or three-year-old tractor can offer most of the functionality of a new model at a significantly lower purchase price, with meaningful depreciation already absorbed by the first owner. Specialist agricultural lenders actively fund used machinery purchases, though their criteria and deposit requirements differ from new equipment finance.

Recent Used

Very similar to new equipment finance. Full panel available, standard deposit requirements, no valuation usually required. Best rates on used equipment.

Mid-Age Used

Specialist lenders comfortable; deposits of 20–25% typical. Asset condition and service history reviewed. Valuation may be required above £50,000.

Older Used

More limited lender panel; 25–35% deposit typical; independent valuation generally required. Still financeable with the right lender.

Vintage / Classic

Financing vintage or collector farm equipment requires specialist lenders. Restored or low-hours examples may qualify, case by case.

Tips for Financing Used Farm Equipment

To maximise your chances of approval and secure the best terms on used equipment finance: obtain a full service history where possible; consider an independent inspection report for older or high-value machinery; purchase from a reputable dealer where possible; and engage a specialist agricultural finance broker who knows which lenders are currently most active for used equipment in your age range.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance second-hand farm equipment?

Yes. Most specialist agricultural lenders finance used farm machinery, though deposit requirements are higher (typically 20–30%) and the asset age and condition are more closely scrutinised than for new equipment.

What is the maximum age of farm equipment that can be financed?

This varies by lender. Some will finance equipment up to 10–15 years old, while others restrict lending to assets under eight years old at the end of the finance term. Specialist lenders have more flexibility than mainstream banks.

Do I need an independent valuation for used farm equipment finance?

For used equipment above a certain value (typically £25,000–£50,000), lenders may require an independent agricultural valuation to confirm the asset's market value and condition. The cost of valuation is typically borne by the borrower.

Does the seller of the used equipment matter to the lender?

Private purchases are more complex for lenders to finance than purchases from a dealer, as title and provenance are harder to verify. Most lenders prefer used equipment purchased from a reputable agricultural dealer.

Can I finance used equipment purchased at auction?

Some specialist lenders will finance auction purchases, though the timeline is tight and finance must usually be arranged before the auction to meet payment deadlines. Speak to a broker well in advance of any planned auction purchase.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
