Volvo Financial Services offers manufacturer-subsidised rates from 4.6% APR on the new Volvo FH - one of the most competitive captive finance rates available in the UK truck market. Independent specialist lenders start from 6.2% APR on new HGVs. This page explains when each route makes sense.
What Is Volvo Financial Services?
Volvo Financial Services (VFS) is the captive finance division of AB Volvo, the Swedish commercial vehicle, construction equipment and marine engine group. VFS operates in over 50 countries and provides hire purchase, finance lease and service lease products for the Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, SDLG and Volvo construction equipment brands.
In the UK, VFS works exclusively through the authorised Volvo Trucks dealer network. You cannot access their finance product directly or through an independent broker - it is a dealer-point product, designed to support new vehicle sales by offering rates that Volvo Group subsidises commercially.
This subsidisation model is how VFS achieves rates that independent lenders cannot match for the same vehicle: Volvo Group treats the interest rate discount as a sales promotion cost, booking it against vehicle margin rather than finance margin. The result is a headline rate that can run 0.5–1.5% APR below independent market rates for the same credit profile.

When Volvo Financial Services Wins
VFS's subsidised rate is a genuine advantage in a specific scenario: a creditworthy business buying a new Volvo through an authorised Volvo Trucks dealer. In that scenario, the 4.6% finance lease or 5.0% hire purchase rate is typically the lowest available in the market by a margin of 0.5–1% APR. Over a 60-month term on a £120,000 vehicle, that difference saves approximately £3,000–£6,000 in interest costs.
Outside that scenario, VFS has no product to offer.
VFS Wins When
- Buying new from a Volvo dealer
- Clean credit, 2+ years trading
- Rate is the primary decision factor
- Running a single-brand Volvo fleet
- Promotional period is active
Independent Wins When
- Buying used trucks (any brand)
- Running a mixed-brand fleet
- Adverse credit or CCJ history
- Sole trader or newer business
- Auction purchase
- Refinancing existing assets
- Complex business structure
Practical Strategy for Volvo Operators
Most Volvo fleet operators who manage their finance well use a combination of both routes. New Volvo purchases go through VFS when a promotional rate is active and the business credit qualifies - capturing the subsidy on each vehicle. Additions to the fleet that fall outside VFS's criteria (used trucks, non-Volvo additions, vehicles purchased at auction) go through the independent panel.
The key practical step is to get an independent comparison before signing at the dealership. VFS does not negotiate - the rate is set by Volvo Group's finance team. An independent quote establishes whether the VFS offer is as competitive as it appears, and occasionally the panel rate is closer to VFS than expected, particularly outside promotional periods.
About the Volvo FH
The Volvo FH is the flagship tractor unit in the Volvo Trucks range, accounting for the majority of new Volvo truck registrations in the UK. The FH series - including the FH16 for maximum payload applications - competes primarily with the Mercedes-Benz Actros, DAF XF, Scania R/S and MAN TGX. VFS finance is available on the full FH range including Euro 6, electric (FH Electric) and the FH with I-Save fuel efficiency package. Electric vehicle finance terms from VFS differ from conventional diesel terms and are quoted separately.
