FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What types of vessel qualify as a passenger vessel for finance purposes?

Lenders apply the MCA's definition: any commercial vessel carrying more than 12 passengers. This covers river ferries, estuary crossings, RoPax ferries, tourist and excursion boats, water taxis, and passenger launches. Vessels must typically hold a valid MCA Class V (rivers/estuaries), Class VI (sheltered waters), or Class VI(A) coding certificate, or equivalent.

What LTV can I achieve on a passenger vessel?

Most lenders in October 2026 offer up to 75–80% LTV on MCA-coded passenger vessels in good survey condition. The best LTV (80%) is available from Close Brothers, Lombard, Hampshire Trust, NatWest, HSBC, and Clydesdale. Shawbrook, Paragon, and Wesleyan cap at 75%. LTV is calculated against the independently surveyed value, not the purchase price.

How does MCA coding affect my finance options?

MCA coding (Class V, VI, or VI(A)) is essential for most lenders - it demonstrates the vessel is certified safe for commercial passenger carrying in the intended operational area. An expired or absent coding certificate will typically result in a declined application. Finance can sometimes be arranged for vessels undergoing recertification, but this is complex and specialist advice is essential.

What is the difference between HP and a finance lease for a passenger vessel?

Under hire purchase (HP), you own the vessel throughout (subject to a final option fee) and can claim capital allowances. Under a finance lease, the lender retains legal title but you have full beneficial use; VAT-registered operators can reclaim input VAT on lease rentals, which is a significant cashflow advantage on high-value ferries. A broker can model both structures on your specific figures.

Can a new company finance a passenger ferry?

Most lenders prefer at least 12–24 months of trading history. However, first-time operators with strong maritime experience and a credible business plan can access finance - particularly from Shawbrook, Wesleyan, and (with appropriate structuring) Hampshire Trust. Personal guarantees from directors will almost always be required for newer entities.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
