Commercial Finance for UK Inland Waterway Operators
Inland waterway commercial craft finance covers a broad and underserved segment of the UK marine finance market. While leisure canal boat finance is widely available through mainstream lenders, the commercial segment - working narrowboats, hotel boats, hire fleets, day trip vessels, and cargo barges - requires lenders who understand Canal & River Trust (CRT) licensing, Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) requirements, and the seasonal revenue patterns of canal tourism and freight businesses.
Doulton Bridging Finance is one of the few specialist brokers actively building lender relationships in this space. We work with six panel lenders who all have demonstrable appetite for inland waterway commercial craft, allowing us to source competitive finance for a wide range of vessel types and operator profiles.
This page sets out the full lender panel with indicative October 2026 rates, links to detailed lender profiles, and guides to the most common inland waterway commercial finance requirements.

What Craft Does Inland Waterway Commercial Finance Cover?
- Working narrowboats - floating offices, craft workshops, mobile retail, maintenance craft
- Hotel boats - crewed narrowboats and wide-beam vessels offering overnight accommodation and catering
- Day trip and passenger vessels - licensed passenger craft carrying members of the public for hire or reward
- Canal hire fleets - self-drive hire narrowboats let to holidaymakers
- Cargo and freight barges - vessels carrying commercial cargo on canals and navigable rivers
- River freight vessels - broader-beam craft operating on tidal and non-tidal rivers
Canal & River Trust Licensing and BSS Requirements
All craft operating commercially on the CRT network require a commercial boat licence. Passenger-carrying vessels additionally require a Passenger Boat Licence. The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) certificate is compulsory for all craft and is valid for 4 years. Lenders will require both documents before releasing funds - your BSS certificate and CRT licence must be current at the time of drawdown and must be maintained throughout the loan term.
Failure to renew BSS or CRT licensing during the loan term constitutes a breach of the finance agreement's undertakings. In practice, lenders will typically give operators time to remedy compliance issues rather than immediately enforcing, but it is important to maintain both documents as a matter of commercial priority.
How Lenders Assess Inland Waterway Commercial Finance Applications
Commercial narrowboat and inland waterway craft lenders assess applications on several key factors:
- Vessel condition and value - independent marine survey required; BSS compliance essential
- Business trading history - 2+ years accounts preferred; sole traders assessed on personal financials
- Revenue evidence - booking history, P&L, management accounts
- Licensing status - CRT/EA licence and BSS certificate
- Deposit or equity - 25–35% typically required depending on lender
- Director guarantees - usually required for limited company borrowers
