How Lenders Assess Port Craft Finance

Lenders look at four key factors when underwriting tugboat and port craft finance: the vessel's MCA certification and survey condition; the operator's trading history and profitability; the strength of contractual revenue (port authority contracts, long-term towage agreements); and the borrower's asset base and existing debt service commitments.

Port authority operators and tug companies with multi-year service contracts generally achieve the most competitive rates, as contracted revenue provides lenders with comfort that loan repayments are well-covered. Speculative or spot-market operators may face higher rates or lower LTV caps.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What types of port craft can be financed?

Finance is available for harbour tugs, escort tugs, ocean-going tugs, pilot boats, bunker barges, dredgers, mooring launches and general workboats. Lenders assess the vessel's MCA coding, trading history and the strength of port authority or contractual revenue.

What deposit do I need for a tugboat?

Most lenders require 20% deposit (80% LTV). Shawbrook and Paragon cap LTV at 75%, so a 25% contribution is needed. For older vessels or less established operators, some lenders may require a larger deposit.

How long can I spread repayments?

Lombard, HSBC and NatWest offer up to 12 years for larger transactions. Close Brothers, Hampshire Trust and Clydesdale typically lend to 10 years. Shawbrook's maximum is 7 years and Paragon lends to 8 years.

Can I finance a second-hand tug?

Yes. Most lenders will consider second-hand vessels provided they hold valid MCA certification, have a recent independent survey, and the age at end of term is acceptable - typically under 25–30 years for commercial working craft.

How does Doulton Bridging Finance help with tugboat finance?

We compare the whole lender market on your behalf, matching your vessel type, ticket size and business profile to the most competitive lender. Our specialist team has experience across harbour tugs, pilot boats and port authority procurement contracts.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
