How to Find the Best Classic Boat Finance Rate
Classic and vintage vessel finance sits in a distinct niche within the wider marine lending market. The lenders willing to finance pre-1980 boats - particularly wooden hull vessels - are a small and specific group. Understanding their criteria before you apply is essential: a declined application leaves a footprint on your credit file and can make subsequent applications harder.
The rate you are offered within each lender's range is primarily driven by four factors: the vessel's survey condition and surveyor's value opinion; the loan-to-value you require; your personal credit profile and income; and the term over which you want to repay. Improving on any of these - putting down a larger deposit, opting for a shorter term, or presenting a recently surveyed vessel in demonstrably excellent condition - will move you toward the lower end of the range.
Classic specialists vs institutional lenders: Pegasus, Rankin and Compass are the three dedicated classic boat specialists - they accept older vessels, offer higher LTVs (75%), and have underwriters who genuinely understand the classic boat market. Close Brothers and United Trust Bank offer competitive floor rates but impose lower LTVs (65%) and are more conservative about vessel age and timber construction. Shawbrook and Together Money occupy the most conservative institutional positions.
Doulton Bridging Finance will approach all relevant lenders simultaneously, securing competing terms without multiple credit searches, and present you with a clear comparison before you commit to any lender.
