Can You Finance an Outboard Motor?

Yes. Outboard motors are financeable assets in the UK marine lending market, available on hire purchase from several specialist lenders including Black Horse Marine, Close Brothers Asset Finance and Rankin Finance. Finance is available for outboards from £3,000 upwards, covering the full range of modern marine outboards from portable 2.5hp tender engines to 350hp+ offshore powerboat motors.

Outboard engine finance works on the same basis as other marine equipment HP: you pay a deposit (typically 20%), the lender funds the remainder, and you own the engine outright at the end of the agreed term (usually 2–7 years).

Key Outboard Brands and Typical Finance Values

The UK outboard market is dominated by a small number of Japanese and American manufacturers. Finance values are generally based on the invoice or retail price for new engines, and specialist valuations for used stock.

  • Yamaha: F2.5–F425 range. Popular, widely serviced, strong resale. Finance from £5,000 for F20 upwards.
  • Mercury: 2.5hp–600hp (V12 Verado). Offshore market leaders at high power. Finance from £5,000 for mid-range.
  • Honda: BF2.3–BF250. Known for reliability and fuel efficiency. Strong residual values.
  • Suzuki: DF4–DF350. Respected mid-market range with broad dealer network.
  • Tohatsu/Nissan: Compact and portable range. Generally at lower price points where personal finance is more appropriate than structured HP.

New vs Used Outboard Finance

Most specialist lenders strongly prefer new outboard motors from authorised dealers. The reasons are practical: new engines have full manufacturer warranty, known service history from day zero, and predictable residual values. Used outboards introduce condition uncertainty and lenders compensate with lower LTV (often 60%–70%) and higher rates.

For used outboard purchases, Rankin Finance is the most accessible lender, accepting used engines from reputable dealers on a case-by-case basis. Personal loans from your bank may also be worth considering for used outboard purchases below £10,000.

Outboard Finance for RIBs and Tenders

Outboards fitted to rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are regularly financed, either as standalone equipment or as part of a combined RIB and engine package. For a complete RIB purchase with outboard, vessel HP covering the full package is often more efficient than separate finance for the engine and hull.

For tender outboards - small engines used to power a dinghy or inflatable to and from a larger vessel - finance is less common given the lower values involved. At under £3,000, a personal loan or credit card may be more practical than structured equipment finance.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance an outboard motor on hire purchase?

Yes. Black Horse, Close Brothers and Rankin Finance all provide hire purchase for outboard motors. Minimum loans start from £3,000 (Rankin) or £5,000 (Black Horse, Close Brothers).

What deposit do I need for outboard engine finance?

Most lenders require 20%–30% deposit. On a £10,000 outboard, you'd need £2,000–£3,000 upfront.

Can I finance an outboard for a dinghy or small boat?

Yes, subject to the minimum loan threshold. For smaller outboards (under £5,000), personal loans or credit may be more appropriate than structured equipment finance.

Does outboard motor finance cover new and used engines?

Most specialist lenders prefer new outboards, but some (including Rankin Finance) will consider used engines from reputable dealers. Condition and age will affect the terms offered.

How long can I spread outboard engine repayments?

Typically 2–7 years. Longer terms reduce monthly payments but increase total interest. For a £15,000 outboard over 5 years at 8% APR, monthly repayments are approximately £304.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
