How to Choose the Right Provider

Close Premium Finance or Premium Credit

For premiums above £500, the two market leaders offer the lowest APR (from 9.2% and 9.5% respectively) and the highest loan-to-value (90% of premium). Close Premium Finance has a slight rate advantage; Premium Credit is more widely accepted across insurers.

AFIG or First Marine Insurance

AFIG and First Marine Insurance both have a £250 minimum, making them accessible for smaller policies. AFIG is better on rate for standard applications; First Marine Insurance is better for unusual vessel types or non-standard cover.

PayBreak

PayBreak's £200 minimum is the lowest on our panel, making it the only option for very small premiums. The APR is higher (11.5%–18.9%), but the convenience of spreading even a small premium into monthly payments is valuable for many policyholders.

First Marine Insurance

For superyacht hull cover, commercial marine P&I, charter liability or other specialist policies that the larger providers may not be set up to finance, First Marine Insurance offers case-by-case assessment and the most flexible criteria.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which marine insurance premium finance provider has the lowest APR?

Close Premium Finance currently offers the lowest headline APR on our panel at 9.2%, for qualifying applicants with premiums above £500.

How do I compare marine insurance premium finance rates?

Compare on APR (total cost), maximum percentage of premium financed, minimum premium eligibility and setup speed. Our rate table above shows all five providers side by side.

Is premium finance cheaper than paying my marine insurance in one go?

Premium finance adds a financing cost (the APR charged). If you have the cash available and can earn more than the premium finance APR elsewhere, paying upfront is cheaper. For most policyholders, the cash flow benefit justifies the cost.

Can I get marine insurance premium finance with bad credit?

AFIG and PayBreak are most likely to consider applicants with adverse credit histories. Rates will be at the higher end of the range. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

Premium finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and subject to the provider's credit assessment. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. If you do not keep up repayments your insurance policy may be cancelled.
