What is Anaerobic Digester Finance?

An anaerobic digester (AD) plant converts organic feedstocks - slurry, food waste, energy crops, crop residues - into biogas, which can be used to generate electricity and heat (via a CHP engine) or upgraded to biomethane and injected into the gas grid. The digestate by-product is a high-value organic fertiliser.

The capital cost of a farm AD plant varies enormously based on scale and configuration, but typical on-farm systems range from £300,000 to £3 million+. Finance is therefore almost always required, and the income streams generated - electricity, heat, biomethane, digestate - are central to the lender's affordability assessment.

Finance Structures for AD Projects

HP / Finance Lease

For smaller, more straightforward AD installations. The digester tanks, CHP unit and ancillary equipment are financed as individual assets. Suitable for on-farm digesters up to around £500,000.

Project Finance

For larger AD plants where the project's income streams are the primary repayment source. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) is often used. Loan-to-cost ratios of 60–75% are typical.

Sale & Leaseback

For farms that have recently built an AD plant using cash or a short-term facility. The completed plant is sold to a funder and leased back, releasing capital. Subject to age and valuation.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How is an anaerobic digester financed differently from other farm equipment?

Anaerobic digesters are complex, multi-component capital projects. They are often funded through structured project finance where the AD plant's projected biogas income (and digestate revenue) forms part of the security and affordability assessment. Lenders such as Close Brothers have dedicated teams experienced in AD project structures.

What income from an AD plant do lenders accept in affordability?

Lenders will typically accept: electricity export income (under SEG or a PPA), Renewable Heat Incentive payments where still in force, biomethane injection income (for gas-to-grid projects), and digestate sales. A credible feedstock supply agreement also strengthens the lender's confidence in the project's long-term viability.

Can I finance an AD plant expansion rather than a new build?

Yes - many farms with existing AD capacity want to expand digester volume, add a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit, or upgrade to gas-to-grid. Expansion finance is available and in some cases easier to arrange than new-build because the feedstock and income history is established.

What planning permission is needed for an AD plant?

Most farm-scale AD plants require full planning permission from the local planning authority. Some smaller "on-farm" digesters may qualify under permitted development rules. Planning consent is a prerequisite for formal finance terms from most lenders.

How long does it take to arrange AD project finance?

Structured AD project finance is more complex than standard asset finance. Allow 4–8 weeks from initial enquiry to formal facility letter for a straightforward project. More complex structures (gas-to-grid, community AD) may take longer. Doulton Bridging Finance will project-manage the process and keep you informed at every stage.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
