Port and Harbour Equipment Finance UK

Finance for port and harbour operators: cranes, reach stackers, forklifts, pontoons, floating docks and mooring equipment. Specialist asset lenders for the UK port sector.

UK ports and harbours operate some of the most capital-intensive equipment in any industry. Cranes, reach stackers, ship-to-shore gantries, floating docks, pontoons, pilot vessels and port tractors represent tens of millions of pounds of capital - all of which can be financed through specialist asset finance arranged by Doulton Bridging Finance.

Forklift Trucks and Harbour Equipment

Pontoons and Floating Docks

Floating pontoons and floating dry docks are significant marine assets suited to finance lease structures. Pontoon values range from £50,000 (small marina pontoon) to £5m+ (large floating dock). Floating docks for ship repair facilities are specialist assets - DBF works with lenders experienced in floating dock finance.

Mooring Equipment and Navigation Aids

Mooring buoys, mooring bollards, pile replacement, navigation buoys, ATON (Aids to Navigation) equipment - these are essential port infrastructure elements. Finance: business loans or asset finance, depending on whether the item is moveable or fixed.

Pilot Vessel and Port Craft Finance

Port Authority pilot vessels, workboats, patrol craft and line-handling vessels are commercial marine assets financed through the same specialist lenders as commercial fishing and offshore vessels. See also our Tugboat and Port Craft Finance page.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a port authority or trust port access commercial asset finance?

Yes. Port authorities - both statutory harbour authorities and trust ports - are eligible borrowers for asset finance. Lenders assess the port's financial position, income streams and governance in the same way as any commercial borrower. Larger facilities may require lender involvement in port governance structures. DBF has experience placing finance for port authority and harbour trust clients.

Is finance available for used port equipment imported from overseas?

Yes. Much port equipment - mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers, floating docks - is purchased secondhand from European, Middle Eastern and Asian ports. Finance is available provided the equipment meets UK safety standards (CE marking or UK equivalent), passes independent survey, and has clear title. Import finance can be arranged to bridge the gap between purchase commitment and asset arrival.

What terms are available for a new ship-to-shore gantry crane?

New ship-to-shore gantry cranes are major capital projects (£8m–£25m+) typically financed through project finance, commercial property-backed facilities, or long-term equipment finance lease (10–20 years). Manufacturer finance programmes are also available from Konecranes, Liebherr and others. DBF can advise on structuring for major port capital projects.

Can I finance replacement pontoons for a marina?

Yes. Pontoon replacement is a common marina capital expenditure financed through asset HP or business loans. Concrete and aluminium pontoons have long asset lives (25–40 years) and are well-understood security. Finance terms of 10–15 years are available for major pontoon replacement programmes.

Is EV charging infrastructure for port vehicles financeable?

Yes. Shore power systems, EV charging infrastructure for port vehicles and terminal tractors, and hydrogen bunkering equipment for green port initiatives are all financeable through asset HP or green energy finance products. Some lenders offer preferential rates for green infrastructure.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
