How to Finance a Forklift Truck in the UK

A plain-English guide to forklift finance in the UK - structures, costs, eligibility and a worked example to show you exactly what to expect.

Introduction

Forklifts and industrial handling equipment represent a significant capital outlay for most businesses. Finance allows you to spread the cost over 2–5 years, preserve working capital and - in most structures - reclaim VAT immediately if you are VAT-registered.

This guide walks you through the main finance options available in the UK market, how to assess which is right for your business, what lenders look for, and a fully worked cost example.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What finance options are available for a forklift truck?

The main options are Hire Purchase (HP), Finance Lease, Operating Lease, and Sale & Leaseback. HP results in ownership at the end of the term. Finance Lease keeps the asset off the balance sheet with rental payments fully tax-deductible. Operating Lease is suitable when you want to return or upgrade the equipment. Sale & Leaseback releases capital from equipment you already own.

How much deposit do I need to finance a forklift?

Deposit requirements vary by lender. High-street banks typically require 10%. Specialist lenders including Hitachi Capital, Close Brothers, Aldermore, Paragon and Shawbrook offer zero-deposit options for eligible businesses. Your credit strength and the age of the equipment affect what is available.

Can I finance a second-hand forklift?

Yes. Most specialist lenders on the open market will finance used forklifts, subject to age (typically up to 10–15 years old) and condition. OEM captive lenders generally restrict finance to new or nearly-new equipment of their own brand. A broker can identify the most receptive lenders for your specific asset.

How long does the finance application take?

Specialist lenders can return credit decisions in 24–48 hours. High-street banks typically take 5–10 working days. Once approved, payout (funds to the dealer) usually follows within 1–3 days of signed documents. A broker reduces total elapsed time by ensuring applications are properly packaged before submission.

Is forklift finance tax-efficient?

Yes. Under Hire Purchase, you can claim the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) on the full cost in Year 1 (up to the AIA limit). Finance Lease payments are typically fully deductible as a business expense. Operating Lease rentals are also deductible. Speak to your accountant about which structure best suits your tax position.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
