Turboprop Finance

Turboprop Finance: Hire Purchase vs Finance Lease

Hire purchase and finance lease are the two most common structures for turboprop aircraft finance in the UK. They differ in ownership, accounting treatment, VAT, and end-of-term options. Choosing the wrong structure can cost you significantly. Doulton Bridging Finance explains the difference and helps you select the right product for your circumstances.

Hire Purchase (HP)

Under HP, you effectively own the aircraft from day one (legal title passes on completion of payments). You can claim capital allowances, and the asset appears on your balance sheet. Monthly payments are fixed, and at the end of the term you own the aircraft outright (or have a nominal option fee to pay).

HP is typically preferred when you want long-term ownership, are claiming capital allowances, or have a straightforward tax position. It is the most common structure for both individual and company turboprop purchases.

Finance Lease

Under finance lease, the finance company retains legal ownership throughout the term. You have use and possession of the aircraft, and the lease liability appears on your balance sheet (under IFRS 16 / FRS 102). At the end of the term, you can typically sell the aircraft as agent for the finance company and retain most of the proceeds.

Finance lease can be more tax-efficient for VAT-registered businesses that need to manage balance sheet ratios, or where capital allowances are less valuable. It is popular with charter operators and holding companies.

Operating Lease

An operating lease is a pure rental arrangement - the aircraft does not appear on your balance sheet (under most accounting standards) and you hand it back at the end. Operating leases for turboprops are less common in the UK private market but do exist for AOC operators with specific fleet management strategies.

Operating leases typically cost more over the term than HP or finance lease, as the lessor bears residual value risk. They can be appropriate where flexibility is the priority.

Which Structure is Right for You?

The right structure depends on your tax position, accounting framework, intended hold period and whether VAT recovery is a factor. We work with your accountant and, where appropriate, specialist aviation tax advisers to identify the optimal structure before approaching lenders.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between HP and finance lease?

Under HP, you own the aircraft (or have the right to own it) and can claim capital allowances. Under finance lease, the finance company retains legal ownership but you bear the economic risk and reward of the asset.

Which is more tax-efficient - HP or finance lease?

This depends entirely on your tax position, VAT status and accounting framework. HP allows capital allowance claims; finance lease may suit companies managing balance sheet ratios. Always take independent tax advice.

Can I switch from HP to finance lease during the term?

Not easily - the two products have different legal structures. However, at refinance (end of term or mid-term), you can switch products. We advise on this when structuring a refinance.

Is VAT treated differently under HP vs finance lease?

Yes. Under HP, VAT is typically due upfront on the purchase price. Under finance lease, VAT is due on each monthly payment. The net VAT position depends on your recovery rate and cash flow. Specialist advice is essential.

What happens at the end of a finance lease?

Typically, you can sell the aircraft as agent for the finance company and retain most of the net proceeds (after settling any residual value). The exact terms are set in the lease agreement. We review end-of-term provisions before you sign any lease.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, aircraft and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your aircraft may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
