How to Get the Best Superyacht Finance Rate

The cheapest superyacht finance rate is not always the right one - and the right rate depends on your individual financial profile, the vessel you are purchasing, and the structure that best serves your tax and ownership objectives. Here is what drives superyacht finance pricing:

1. Client Profile & Relationship Value

Private banks price superyacht finance as part of a relationship. The more wealth management, investment and banking business you bring, the better your marine finance rate will be. Coutts, HSBC Private and Barclays Private all price aggressively for clients with substantial AUM - often 50–100 basis points below what a standalone application would achieve.

2. Loan-to-Value

A lower LTV - more equity in the vessel - almost always produces a lower rate. Borrowing 50% of the vessel's value will typically achieve materially better pricing than borrowing 70%, all else being equal. If you have the capital to reduce LTV, run the maths on whether the rate saving outweighs the deployment opportunity cost of that capital.

3. Term Length

Shorter terms typically attract lower rates. However, a longer term at a slightly higher rate can produce a lower monthly payment - the right choice depends on your cash flow requirements and whether you anticipate selling or refinancing before the end of term.

4. Vessel Quality and Survey

Lenders price against risk, and risk in the superyacht market is closely linked to vessel condition, classification status and resale liquidity. A well-maintained, recently surveyed vessel from a reputable builder will attract better terms than an older, high-maintenance asset with deferred survey. Investing in a pre-purchase survey and addressing any defects before approaching lenders can pay dividends.

5. Broker vs Direct Approach

Approaching a private bank directly, cold, for superyacht finance typically produces a longer timeline and less competitive pricing than going through an established broker relationship. Lenders reserve their keenest terms for introduced business from brokers they trust - and a well-packaged submission from a regulated broker significantly reduces the friction of new client onboarding.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Who offers the best superyacht finance rates in the UK right now?

As of October 2026, Coutts offers the lowest headline rate at 4.2% APR, followed by HSBC Private Bank at 4.3% and Barclays Private at 4.5%. These rates are reserved for UHNW private banking clients. For non-private-banking clients, Close Brothers from 5.5% and Pegasus from 5.9% are the most competitive accessible options.

What is a good LTV for superyacht finance?

70%–75% represents a high LTV in the superyacht market, available from Investec and Pegasus. Private banks typically offer 60%–65%. A higher LTV means less equity required but increases the loan amount and total interest cost.

How much deposit do I need for superyacht finance?

Typically 25%–40% depending on the lender. At 65% LTV (e.g. Barclays Private), you need 35% deposit - £700,000 on a £2m vessel. At 75% LTV (Pegasus), the deposit reduces to 25% - £500,000 on the same vessel.

Can I get superyacht finance as a non-UK resident?

Yes - HSBC Private Bank and Credit Suisse UK (UBS Group) are particularly well suited to internationally mobile clients. Multi-currency facilities (GBP, EUR, USD) are available, and offshore ownership structures can often be accommodated.

Is it better to use a broker or go direct to a superyacht lender?

A broker with genuine lender relationships adds value by creating competitive tension between lenders, packaging your case to the lender's preferred format, and advising on optimal structure. For private banking relationships, a broker introduction often accelerates the process and secures better pricing than a cold direct approach.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
