About Pegasus Marine Finance Yacht Import Loans

Pegasus Marine Finance is one of the UK's most flexible specialist marine lenders, with a long track record of funding imported yachts. Post-Brexit, importing a yacht from France, Spain, the Netherlands or beyond the EU carries VAT and duty implications, and many high-street lenders simply decline foreign-registered vessels. Pegasus takes a more pragmatic view: they will consider yachts registered under EU flags, BVI, Cayman Islands or other flags of convenience, subject to a UK-based survey and satisfactory title check.

Their yacht import finance product is structured as hire purchase or a marine mortgage, with repayment terms extending to 20 years for larger amounts. The maximum loan-to-value of 80% applies to the lower of purchase price or surveyed value, and the minimum advance of £10,000 makes this product accessible for mid-market sailing yachts as well as prestige motor yachts. Doulton Bridging Finance presents completed cases to Pegasus with full documentation packs, accelerating the process significantly compared to applying direct.

Key considerations for import finance with Pegasus: the vessel must pass a satisfactory survey by an IIMS- or RYA-accredited surveyor, VAT status must be declared (VAT-paid or VAT-suspended under certain conditions), and the borrower must hold, or be arranging, appropriate marine insurance. Where the yacht is currently flagged outside the UK, Pegasus will typically require a UK re-registration plan or accept the current flag with additional legal undertakings. We guide clients through this documentation process as part of our broker service.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance an EU-registered yacht in the UK with Pegasus?

Yes. Pegasus Marine Finance is one of the few UK lenders willing to consider EU-registered and foreign-flagged yachts, subject to a UK survey and satisfactory title verification. A re-registration plan or legal undertaking regarding flag state may be required.

What VAT position do I need for import finance?

The lender will want clarity on VAT status. If the yacht was VAT-paid in an EU country before Brexit it may retain its status; yachts purchased after Brexit may face UK import VAT of 20%. We work with specialist marine VAT advisers and can refer you.

Does Pegasus fund sailing yachts as well as motor yachts?

Yes - Pegasus funds both sailing and motor yachts. There is no restriction on vessel type provided it passes survey and meets their minimum value thresholds.

How long does the import finance process take?

From initial enquiry to drawdown typically takes 3–6 weeks, depending on survey availability, flag-state documentation and legal work. Doulton Bridging Finance accelerates this by pre-packaging the documentation before approaching the lender.

What is the maximum term available?

Pegasus offers terms up to 20 years for yacht import finance, making monthly repayments more manageable for larger loans. Shorter terms attract lower headline rates.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
