Telehandler Finance Guide: Hire Purchase vs Operating Lease for Farms

A plain-English comparison of the two most popular telehandler finance structures for UK farms - hire purchase and operating lease. We explain the tax, cashflow and ownership implications of each.

Why the Finance Structure Matters

A telehandler is typically a £60,000–£200,000 purchase. Getting the finance structure right affects your monthly cashflow, your tax position, your balance sheet and your flexibility when the machine needs replacing in five to seven years. This guide covers the two structures most commonly used by UK farms: hire purchase (HP) and operating lease.

Hire Purchase (HP)

You Own the Asset

At the end of the HP term, title passes to you on payment of a nominal option-to-purchase fee (typically £1). The asset appears on your balance sheet from day one.

Capital Allowances

Because you own the asset, you can claim Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) in year one - potentially writing off the full cost in the year of purchase against your taxable profits.

Fixed Monthly

Payments are fixed for the term. A balloon payment option reduces monthly outgoings. Interest is tax-deductible as a finance charge.

VATPaid upfront (reclaimed by VAT-registered businesses)

Operating Lease

Asset Off Balance Sheet

The lender owns the asset throughout. It does not appear as a liability on your balance sheet, which can improve key financial ratios.

Rentals Fully Deductible

Operating lease rentals are treated as an operating expense - fully deductible against profits in the year paid. No capital allowances, but no depreciation charge either.

Return or Upgrade

At the end of the term, hand the machine back or upgrade. The lender carries the residual value risk - useful when technology or emissions regulations may reduce the machine's value.

JCB Finance vs Independent Broker: Telehandler Finance Compared

When you buy a JCB telehandler through an authorised dealer, the sales team will typically introduce you to JCB Finance. This is convenient, but convenience is not always the same as value. JCB Finance is JCB's own captive lending arm. Rates are competitive during promotional periods but tend to sit 1–2% above the best independent alternatives outside those windows.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between hire purchase and operating lease for a telehandler?

With hire purchase you own the asset at the end of the term; with an operating lease you hand it back (or pay a residual). HP gives you capital allowances; operating lease keeps the asset off your balance sheet and may give lower monthly payments.

Can I claim capital allowances on a telehandler financed on HP?

Yes. On a hire purchase agreement you can claim the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) in year one up to the AIA threshold, or writing-down allowances at 18% on the main pool. Consult your accountant for your specific position.

Is an operating lease suitable for a seasonal farming business?

Operating lease payments can be structured seasonally - lower in winter months and higher post-harvest - making them attractive for arable and mixed farms with irregular cash flow.

What happens to VAT on a telehandler finance lease?

On a finance lease, VAT is charged on each rental payment rather than the full asset value upfront. For VAT-registered businesses this is typically cashflow-neutral but avoids the large upfront VAT payment required on HP.

Can I finance a telehandler with a balloon payment?

Yes. A balloon or residual value payment at the end of an HP agreement reduces monthly payments during the term. This is common where strong residual values exist - as they do on leading brands like JCB Loadall, Manitou and Merlo.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
