Bad Credit Commercial Vehicle Finance UK - CCJs, Defaults & IVAs

Commercial vehicle finance with bad credit, CCJs, defaults or IVAs. Which lenders consider adverse credit and what deposit you will need.

What Counts as Bad Credit for Commercial Vehicle Finance?

Lenders assess credit through a combination of business credit bureau data (Experian, Equifax, Creditsafe) and personal credit checks on directors. Adverse markers include: County Court Judgements (CCJs) on the business or director; defaults on credit agreements; late payment history; individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs); and prior bankruptcies (discharged or undischarged). Each lender weights these differently.

Lenders Who Consider Adverse Credit

Close Brothers Asset Finance is consistently the most flexible mainstream lender for adverse credit commercial vehicle applications. They assess each case on its merits rather than applying automated scoring. United Trust Bank and a number of smaller specialist funders also actively write adverse credit CV business. Rates are higher - typically 12%–20% APR - and deposits of 20%–35% are common.

CCJs - How Much Do They Matter?

A single satisfied CCJ (paid) from more than 12 months ago is much less damaging than a recent unsatisfied one. Lenders distinguish between CCJs that indicate a one-off cash flow problem (often acceptable) and patterns of non-payment suggesting systemic financial difficulty (more problematic). Providing a brief explanation of the circumstances behind any adverse marks can significantly help your application.

What You Can Do to Improve Your Application

Offer a larger deposit (25%+ removes a lot of lender risk); apply through a specialist broker who knows which lenders are actively writing adverse credit CV business; provide management accounts showing current profitable trading; and if the adverse marks are old, demonstrate a clear period of clean payment history since then.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I get van or lorry finance with a CCJ?

Yes, in many cases. Satisfied CCJs, especially older ones, are considered by specialist lenders including Close Brothers and United Trust Bank. An unsatisfied CCJ makes approval harder but not impossible with a larger deposit and a specialist broker.

How much deposit do I need with bad credit?

Typically 20–30% for moderate adverse credit, rising to 35% or more for serious adverse history. A larger deposit reduces the lender's risk and improves your chances significantly.

Will applying for finance hurt my credit score?

Hard credit searches leave a mark on your credit file. Using a broker who does soft searches initially before placing your application with a specific lender minimises the impact. Avoid applying directly to multiple lenders simultaneously.

Can a sole trader with bad credit get commercial vehicle finance?

Yes. Lenders assess your personal credit history and business income together. A sole trader with adverse credit who can demonstrate strong current earnings and offer a meaningful deposit has a reasonable chance of approval with the right lender.

How long does adverse credit stay on my file?

Most adverse markers remain on your credit file for 6 years from the date of the default or CCJ. A bankruptcy (sequestration in Scotland) is also 6 years. After this period, your credit profile should reflect only clean recent history.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
