Contract Hire vs Finance Lease for Van Fleets

Contract hire vs finance lease for van fleets. Compare monthly cost, flexibility, residual value risk, VAT, tax and balance sheet treatment.

Contract Hire for Van Fleets

Contract hire fixes your monthly cost for the term. You pay a pre-agreed rental, use the van, and return it at the end. The lender takes all residual value risk - if used van values fall during your contract, that is the lender's problem, not yours. Maintenance packages can be bundled in, making it a truly fixed-cost solution. There is no large capital outlay and no vehicle disposal to manage.

Finance Lease for Van Fleets

Under a finance lease, you make lower monthly rentals because you retain an interest in the vehicle's residual value. When the lease ends, the vehicle is sold; the lender takes a small percentage of the proceeds (typically 2–5%) and passes the rest to you as a secondary rental credit. If used van prices are high at the end of the lease, you benefit. If they are low, you absorb the shortfall.

Mileage and Flexibility

Contract hire agreements include a contracted annual mileage. Exceeding it triggers an excess mileage charge (typically 5–15p per mile). Finance leases have no mileage restriction because you share in the residual value. For high-mileage fleets (15,000+ miles per van per year), finance lease often works out cheaper overall.

Which is Right for Your Fleet?

Contract hire suits fleets that value cost certainty, want maintenance included, operate within predictable mileage and prefer to avoid vehicle disposal. Finance lease suits fleets with variable or high mileage, those that want lower monthly payments and are comfortable managing vehicle sale at the end of the term.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is contract hire or finance lease cheaper for a van fleet?

Finance lease typically has lower monthly rentals because you retain residual value exposure. Contract hire is often cheaper in total if used van values fall during your contract, as the lender absorbs the shortfall rather than you.

Which gives better VAT recovery - contract hire or finance lease?

Both give 100% VAT recovery on monthly rentals for commercial vehicles (vans with payload over 1 tonne). The VAT treatment is the same. The 50% VAT block applies only to cars, not commercial vehicles.

What happens at the end of a finance lease on a van fleet?

The lender sells the vans. They retain a small percentage of the sale proceeds (typically 2–5%) and credit the remainder against your account as a secondary rental. If values are high, you benefit significantly. If low, the secondary credit is smaller.

Can I terminate contract hire early?

Early termination of contract hire incurs penalties - typically a percentage of remaining rentals. Most agreements allow termination from month 12 onwards with a termination charge. Read the early termination clause carefully before signing.

Does finance lease appear on my balance sheet?

Yes, under FRS102. A finance lease is recognised as a right-of-use asset and lease liability. Contract hire (as an operating lease) stays off the balance sheet, which may matter for businesses with gearing covenants.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
