Owner-Driver HGV Finance - Financing Your First Artic

Complete guide to financing your first artic as an owner-driver or owner-operator. O-licence requirements, deposit expectations, tachograph card and which.

Buying your first artic as an owner-driver is one of the most significant financial decisions in a haulier's career. The right finance structure, lender and deposit level can determine whether your business is profitable from day one or whether the cost of borrowing eats into your margins. This guide covers everything an aspiring owner-driver needs to know before approaching a lender.

What is Owner-Driver HGV Finance?

Owner-driver (or owner-operator) HGV finance refers to financing a tractor unit for a single driver who operates their own vehicle - typically on a sub-contract basis for a haulage company, or under their own haulage contracts. The borrower is often a sole trader or newly incorporated limited company, and the vehicle is the primary business asset.

The Operator Licence (O-Licence)

To legally operate an artic for hire or reward in the UK, you need a Standard National or Standard International Operator Licence issued by the Traffic Commissioner. Most lenders will want to see your O-licence before releasing funds - but several will agree terms in principle while you are awaiting the licence, with drawdown conditional on it being granted.

The application process takes 9–13 weeks on average. You will need to demonstrate: financial standing (£8,000 for the first vehicle, £4,450 for each additional), an operating centre address, a nominated Transport Manager (or holder of a transport manager CPC), and evidence of vehicle maintenance arrangements.

The Tachograph Card

You will need a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and a digital tachograph card. Some lenders check that you hold these as part of their underwriting - they demonstrate that you are a legitimate professional driver, which reduces perceived fraud risk. Have copies ready alongside your finance application.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a sole trader finance an artic tractor unit?

Yes - Close Brothers, Haydock Finance, Aldermore and Time Finance all finance sole trader owner-drivers. The key is demonstrating income through bank statements and evidence of haulage contracts or sub-contract agreements.

Do I need an Operator Licence before I can get HGV finance?

Most lenders require a valid O-licence or evidence of a formal application to the Traffic Commissioner. Several will agree terms in principle while you await the licence, with the loan drawn down once it is granted. Start the O-licence application as early as possible given the 9–13 week processing time.

How much deposit do I need to finance my first artic?

As a new owner-operator, budget for 20–25% deposit. Close Brothers and Haydock Finance are sometimes willing to consider lower deposits (10–15%) for drivers with strong employment histories and clear evidence of sub-contract work.

What sub-contract rate do I need to cover artic finance costs?

A useful rule of thumb: finance should represent no more than 20–25% of your projected gross revenue. For a £52,000 financed artic at 9.5% over 4 years, monthly costs are approximately £1,300/mo. At £1.80/mile, you would need 720 loaded miles per week to cover finance alone - well within reach of full-time owner-operators.

Can I get owner-driver HGV finance with a CCJ on my record?

Yes - Haydock Finance and Time Finance both actively consider owner-driver applications with CCJs. Satisfied CCJs over 12 months old are treated more leniently. A larger deposit and a strong haulage contract are the most effective ways to support an application with adverse credit.

Some finance for sole traders and small partnerships is regulated by the FCA, depending on the amount borrowed. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
