What is a Balloon Payment on HGV Finance?
A balloon payment is a deferred lump sum at the end of a hire purchase agreement. Rather than repaying the full vehicle cost in equal monthly instalments, a portion - typically 15% to 25% of the purchase price - is set aside as a final payment. This reduces the monthly repayments throughout the term, improving cash flow for operators. Until the balloon is paid, the finance company retains legal title.

Tax Treatment of Balloon HP
The tax treatment follows standard HP rules regardless of the balloon structure: Annual Investment Allowance is available on the full vehicle value (£120,000 in the example) in year one - not just the amount being repaid monthly. The interest element within each monthly payment and within the balloon is deductible as a finance cost. The balloon capital repayment itself is not a deductible expense.
Lenders Offering Balloon HP on HGVs
Close Brothers Asset Finance, Lombard (NatWest group), Shawbrook Bank and Aldermore are among the mainstream lenders offering balloon HP on heavy commercial vehicles. Specialist brokers can access a wider panel including niche funders for older vehicles or adverse credit applicants. Terms and balloon percentages vary between lenders.
When Balloon HP Makes Sense
Balloon structures suit operators who need lower monthly payments to manage seasonal cash flow, or who have confidence the vehicle will retain residual value. They work well for newer HGVs where residual values are more predictable, but carry more risk on older vehicles or those with high annual mileage. Engage a broker 6 months before the balloon falls due to explore your refinancing options.
