Commercial Vehicle Tax Guide

VAT on Commercial Vehicle Finance - Can You Reclaim VAT on Van and Truck Finance?

Complete guide to VAT recovery on van, lorry and truck finance. HP, finance lease and contract hire. 100% recovery for commercial vehicles.

VAT on Hire Purchase

When you buy a commercial vehicle on HP, the finance company charges VAT on the full purchase price at the outset. If you are VAT-registered and using the vehicle entirely for business, you can reclaim 100% of the VAT in your next VAT return. The interest payments are VAT-exempt. Example: a DAF LF at £85,000 + VAT generates a £17,000 reclaimable VAT credit.

VAT on Finance Lease Rentals

On a finance lease, VAT is charged on each monthly rental. For a commercial vehicle, 100% of the VAT on each rental is recoverable by a VAT-registered business. This is a key contrast to car leases, where there is a statutory 50% VAT block. The 50% block does not apply to vans, trucks, lorries or other genuine commercial vehicles.

Contract Hire - VAT Treatment

Contract hire works the same as finance lease for VAT: VAT is charged on each monthly rental, and a VAT-registered business recovers 100% subject to no significant private use. If a maintenance element is included, VAT on that portion is also recoverable.

Cars vs Commercial Vehicles - The Critical Distinction

HMRC defines a car for VAT purposes as a vehicle designed primarily for carrying passengers. A commercial vehicle must have a payload of over one tonne to escape the car VAT rules. Most vans (Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Vivaro) comfortably meet this threshold. Vans with windows and rear seats fitted may fall into the car category, triggering the 50% VAT block.

Double-Cab Pickups - 2024 HMRC Update

Double-cab pickups (Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max) with a payload of 1 tonne or more remain commercial vehicles for VAT purposes - 100% VAT recovery still applies. However, for benefit-in-kind income tax purposes, these vehicles are now treated as cars from April 2025, significantly increasing BIK charges for employees or directors using them privately. The VAT and BIK rules operate independently.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a VAT-registered business reclaim 100% of VAT on van finance?

Yes, for genuine commercial vehicles used wholly for business. Unlike cars (50% block on leases), vans and lorries with payload over one tonne attract 100% VAT recovery on both HP purchases and lease rentals, provided there is no significant private use.

Is a double-cab pickup a car or commercial vehicle for VAT?

HMRC updated guidance in 2024. Double-cab pickups with payload of one tonne or more continue to qualify as commercial vehicles for VAT recovery. However, for benefit-in-kind income tax they are now treated as cars from April 2025. The two sets of rules operate independently.

When is VAT charged on HP commercial vehicle finance?

VAT is charged on the full purchase price at the start of the HP agreement. A VAT-registered business reclaims this in its next VAT return. The HP interest element is VAT-exempt.

What if my van is used privately as well as for business?

If a commercial vehicle is used for private journeys, HMRC may restrict your VAT recovery to the business-use proportion. Unlike cars (automatic 50% block), the restriction for vans is based on actual private use. Document your position carefully.

Does contract hire VAT work the same as finance lease?

Yes. VAT is charged on each monthly rental and a VAT-registered business using the vehicle exclusively for business recovers 100%. If a maintenance package is included, VAT on that element is also recoverable.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
