Sole Trader Van Finance - How to Finance a Van Without a Limited Company

Finance a van as a sole trader or self-employed person. Which lenders accept sole traders, what documents you need, and how to maximise your chances of.

As a sole trader, you can absolutely finance a van - but the process differs slightly from a limited company application. Not all lenders consider sole traders, and those that do require specific documentation to assess affordability without formal company accounts.

Can a Sole Trader Get Van Finance?

Yes. Several of the UK's major asset finance lenders actively target sole traders and self-employed individuals. The key is using a broker who knows which lenders operate in this space, rather than approaching a bank directly where sole traders are frequently declined on automated criteria.

What Documents Do You Need?

Bank statements

The single most important document for sole trader applications. Most lenders want 3–6 months of business bank statements showing regular income and positive day-to-day conduct (no returned direct debits or persistent overdraft). If you use a personal account for business, provide those statements but be prepared to explain the mixing of personal and business transactions.

Proof of income

An SA302 (HMRC self-assessment tax calculation) is the gold standard for proving sole trader income. If your most recent SA302 is not yet available, bank statements showing consistent income deposits are often sufficient for specialist lenders.

Asset details

The lender will want an invoice, auction confirmation or dealer quotation for the van. If you are buying privately, a written agreement confirming the sale price and seller details is needed.

Proof of ID and address

Standard AML requirements - driving licence or passport, plus a utility bill or bank statement dated within 3 months.

Tips to Improve Your Sole Trader Application

Keep your bank account in credit and avoid returned payments in the 3 months before applying. Separate your business and personal finances if you have not already. Ensure your most recent self-assessment is filed and an SA302 is available. A deposit of 10–20% significantly improves approval chances for new sole traders.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a sole trader get van finance without a limited company?

Yes - Close Brothers, Aldermore, Haydock Finance, 1pm Finance and Reward Funding all actively finance sole traders. The key is using a broker who knows which lenders accept self-employed applicants and how to present the application effectively.

What proof of income does a sole trader need for van finance?

An SA302 from HMRC is the preferred document for proving self-employed income. If unavailable, 6 months of business bank statements showing consistent income deposits are accepted by most specialist lenders. Self-certification is occasionally accepted for very low loan values.

Do I need business bank statements or personal ones?

Business bank statements are preferred. If you operate from a personal account, provide those statements - most specialist lenders understand that sole traders often mix personal and business finances, particularly in early trading stages.

How much deposit does a sole trader need for van finance?

Many lenders will fund sole traders with no deposit if they have clean credit and 12+ months of trading. For new or early-stage sole traders, or those with adverse credit, a deposit of 20–30% significantly improves approval chances.

Can a self-employed person with bad credit get van finance?

Yes - 1pm Finance and Reward Funding both actively consider self-employed applicants with adverse credit histories. Haydock Finance and Close Brothers will also assess cases with older or satisfied CCJs. A broker can identify the best lender for your specific credit profile.

Some finance for sole traders and small partnerships is regulated by the FCA, depending on the amount borrowed. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
