Finance for Used and Second-Hand Industrial Machinery

Expert guidance from Doulton Bridging Finance - independent specialists in UK manufacturing and industrial asset finance.

Lender Appetite for Used Assets

The specialist asset finance market is generally comfortable with used industrial machinery, though appetite varies significantly by lender. Tier 1 lenders (Aldermore, Shawbrook, Close Brothers) typically accept assets up to 10 years old. Tier 2 and private funders can accommodate older assets or those from less common manufacturers, at slightly higher rates.

Age Restrictions and Valuation Requirements

Most lenders assess used machinery on a combination of: age (years since manufacture), remaining useful life, asset type and manufacturer reputation, and maintenance history. A 5-year-old Mazak machining centre is viewed very differently from a 5-year-old piece of bespoke processing equipment. Valuations are typically required for assets over £50,000, commissioned from independent engineers rather than the seller.

What DBF Does for Used Asset Finance

DBF maintains relationships with lenders who have strong appetites for used industrial machinery. We commission valuations, prepare the credit submission highlighting asset quality and depreciation curve, and often negotiate advance rates higher than the borrower could achieve directly. We also help with insurance requirements.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a valuation for used machinery?

For assets over £50,000, most lenders require an independent engineer's valuation. DBF arranges valuations through specialist machinery valuers, typically completing within 3–5 working days. For lower-value assets, a desktop valuation (using auction and market data) may suffice.

Is the rate significantly higher for used vs new machinery?

Generally 1.5–2.5% higher for used assets, reflecting the higher residual value risk. The spread narrows for relatively recent machines (1–3 years old) in good condition from known manufacturers.

Can I finance used machinery bought at auction?

Yes. Several specialist lenders are comfortable with auction purchases. They typically require a confirmation of the asset's condition (often an engineer's report) and funds are usually drawn after the auction purchase is confirmed. DBF has arranged finance for machinery bought at Blackbird Auctions, TBAuctions and other specialist industrial auctioneers.

What happens if the machinery breaks down during the finance term?

The finance agreement is not directly affected - payments continue regardless of the asset's operational status. This is why insurance (typically engineering breakdown and loss insurance) is strongly recommended and often required by lenders.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
