FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can Nucleus finance a sole trader buying a working narrowboat?

Yes. Nucleus Commercial Finance is one of the few lenders in this market willing to consider sole trader applications for commercial narrowboat or inland waterway craft finance. They will review personal bank statements and accountant's reference alongside any business accounts available.

How quickly can Nucleus approve inland waterway finance?

Nucleus aims for credit decisions within 24–48 hours for facilities under £100k with a clean application. More complex cases or larger amounts take 3–5 working days. Full drawdown can typically be arranged within 5–7 working days of approval.

Does Nucleus require a BSS certificate upfront?

Yes. Nucleus will require the current Boat Safety Scheme certificate and Canal & River Trust (or Environment Agency for river craft) licence before drawdown. They may accept a satisfactory pre-purchase survey with a condition that BSS is completed within 30 days of drawdown.

What is the maximum amount Nucleus will lend on a canal hire fleet?

The maximum per-application limit is £400,000. For fleet scenarios, Nucleus can in principle approve separate facilities per vessel up to this limit each, though underwriting becomes more conservative as aggregate exposure increases. For fleets above £400k total, we recommend approaching Close Brothers or Hampshire Trust.

Will Nucleus consider a cargo barge or river freight vessel?

Nucleus can consider river freight and cargo barge applications but their appetite is more limited here than for tourism or hire craft. Revenue evidence from existing freight contracts is particularly important, and rates tend to be at the upper end of their range for this vessel type.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vessel and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vessel may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
