Second-Hand Boat Finance UK: Best Rates and Lenders for Used Vessels

Age restrictions, survey requirements, LTV differences and private sale finance - the complete guide to buying a used boat on finance in the UK in 2026.

The Used Boat Finance Market in 2026

Second-hand boat finance represents the majority of UK marine lending by volume. Most boat buyers are purchasing pre-owned vessels, and the marine finance market has adapted to accommodate them - though with tighter criteria than apply to new vessel purchases.

The key variables that affect your eligibility and rate for used boat finance are: the vessel's age, its condition (as confirmed by survey), whether you are buying from a dealer or private seller, and the LTV you require. Understanding how each of these affects lender appetite will help you structure your application for maximum success.

Age Restrictions by Lender

LenderMax Vessel AgeNotes
Black Horse Marine15 years at drawdownStricter age limits; prefer younger, well-documented vessels
Pegasus Marine Finance20 yearsSome flexibility to 25 years for strong applicants
Together Money30+ yearsCase by case; survey-led; will consider vintage and classic
Shawbrook Bank25 yearsGood appetite for 15–25 year range; survey critical
Specialist bridging lendersNo fixed limitWill consider any age if survey supports value
Close Brothers15 yearsMainstream dealer finance; tighter age criteria

Survey Requirements for Older Boats

For second-hand vessels, particularly those over 10 years old, the independent marine survey is the cornerstone of the finance application. The lender will:

  • Use the surveyed value (not the asking price) as the basis for LTV calculation
  • Check for material defects that affect the vessel's condition or safety
  • Require defects noted in the survey to be rectified before drawdown (or agree a retention on funds)
  • Assess the expected remaining useful life of the vessel

What a marine survey for finance must cover

  • Hull condition (including osmosis check for GRP vessels)
  • Structural integrity and deck hardware
  • Engine(s) - survey plus sea trial required by most lenders
  • Electrical systems and navigation equipment
  • Safety equipment (life rafts, flares, EPIRB) - note expiry dates
  • Standing and running rigging (for sailing yachts)

Surveys for finance purposes should be conducted by a member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) or the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA).

LTV: New Vessels vs Used Vessels

ScenarioMax LTV (typical)Notes
New vessel from recognised builder85%Dealer purchase; no survey required
Used vessel, under 5 years80%Good condition; survey required
Used vessel, 5–10 years75%Standard market; survey required
Used vessel, 10–20 years65–70%Fewer lenders; condition critical
Used vessel, 20+ years55–65%Specialist lenders only
Private sale (any age)65–70%Some lenders reduce LTV for private sales

Private Sale vs Dealer Purchase

Buying from a marine dealer is simpler from a finance perspective: the dealer is a known counterparty, the vessel has typically been serviced and validated by the dealership, and most marine HP lenders have established dealer relationships that streamline the process.

Private sale finance is available but requires more work:

  • A full independent survey is mandatory (non-negotiable for every lender)
  • Title verification - the lender will check the HPI register (or equivalent) to confirm the vessel is not subject to existing finance
  • The seller may need to provide documentation including original purchase receipts, historic service records and registration documents
  • Drawdown may be via a solicitor undertaking rather than directly to the seller

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum age of boat that lenders will finance?

Most mainstream marine HP lenders (Black Horse, Pegasus) will finance boats up to 20 years old. Specialist lenders (Together, Shawbrook) will consider boats 20–30 years old, and some bridging lenders will go further. Classic and heritage vessels (over 30 years) can be financed but require specialist lenders and detailed surveys.

Do I need a survey to finance a used boat?

Yes - virtually every lender will require an independent condition and valuation survey on any second-hand vessel. The survey must be carried out by a qualified marine surveyor (member of IIMS, YDSA or equivalent) and must be recent (typically within 3 months of application). The survey confirms the vessel's condition and value, which is the lender's security.

What LTV can I get on a 10-year-old used boat?

For a 10-year-old vessel in good surveyed condition, most marine HP lenders will offer 70–75% LTV. Some specialist lenders offer 75–80% for strong applicants with well-maintained vessels. The LTV is applied to the lower of the purchase price and the surveyed value.

Can I finance a boat bought from a private seller (not a dealer)?

Yes, but fewer lenders will participate. Black Horse and some HP lenders prefer dealer purchases. Pegasus Marine Finance, Together and Shawbrook will consider private sales, subject to a survey and standard eligibility checks. The process is similar but you may need to provide additional information about the seller.

What happens if the survey value is lower than the purchase price?

The lender will calculate LTV based on the lower figure - the survey value. If you are paying more than survey value, your effective deposit requirement increases. For example: purchase price £90,000, survey value £80,000, lender offers 75% LTV of £80,000 = £60,000. You must fund the remaining £30,000 from your own resources.
