Tractor Finance Guide: HP vs Finance Lease vs Operating Lease

Choosing the right finance structure for your tractor is as important as choosing the right lender. This guide explains the three main options - hire purchase (HP), finance lease and operating lease - and which suits different farming businesses.

Hire Purchase (HP)

Hire purchase is the most common tractor finance structure. You pay fixed monthly instalments over an agreed term (typically 24–84 months) and own the tractor outright at the end. A balloon or final payment may be included to reduce monthly costs.

Best for:

  • Farmers who want to own their tractor at the end of term
  • Businesses that want to claim capital allowances on the asset
  • Simple, predictable monthly budgeting

Tax treatment:

You can claim capital allowances (Annual Investment Allowance or Writing Down Allowance) on the asset value. VAT on the purchase price is recoverable in full on day one if you are VAT-registered.

Finance Lease

Under a finance lease, the lender buys the tractor and leases it to you for a fixed term. You do not own the asset at the end - you either return it, re-lease it or arrange a sale to a third party. The rental payments are typically fully tax-deductible as a business expense.

Best for:

  • Businesses that want to keep the asset off the balance sheet
  • VAT-registered farmers who want to spread VAT over the term (lease rental VAT vs lump sum on HP)
  • Operations prioritising cash flow over ownership

Tax treatment:

Lease rentals are 100% deductible against trading profit. No capital allowances are available as you do not own the asset. VAT is charged on each rental payment rather than the full purchase price upfront.

Operating Lease

An operating lease is a rental agreement where the lender retains a significant residual value risk on the asset. Monthly payments are lower than HP or finance lease because you are not financing the full asset value. At the end of term, the asset is returned to the lender.

Best for:

  • Farmers who want the lowest possible monthly payment
  • Businesses that upgrade equipment regularly and do not want to manage resale
  • Operations where off-balance sheet treatment is important

Tax treatment:

Rental payments are deductible as an operating expense. No ownership, no capital allowances. The lender takes the residual value risk - this is reflected in the rental rate.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is hire purchase or finance lease better for a tractor?

It depends on your priorities. HP gives ownership and allows capital allowances but requires more capital. Finance lease has lower initial outlay, keeps the asset off balance sheet, and rentals are fully tax-deductible. Your accountant can advise on the best structure for your tax position.

Can I claim capital allowances on a financed tractor?

Yes, if you use hire purchase. You own the asset from the start of the agreement and can claim AIA or WDA on the full purchase price. Finance and operating leases do not qualify for capital allowances as the lender retains ownership.

What is the minimum deposit for tractor HP in the UK?

Deposits range from 0% (on some Close Brothers deals) to 10–20% depending on the lender, asset age and your credit profile. A broker will identify which lenders require the lowest deposit for your specific situation.

Can I refinance a tractor I already own?

Yes - sale and leaseback allows you to sell your tractor to a finance company and immediately lease it back, releasing capital while retaining use of the equipment.

How long can I spread tractor finance?

HP and finance lease are typically available over 12–84 months (up to 7 years). Operating lease terms are usually 24–60 months. Longer terms reduce monthly payments but increase total interest.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
