Agricultural Finance

Tractor Finance for New Farmers & Start-Ups

Starting a farming business is capital-intensive, and acquiring the right equipment early is often essential. This guide covers tractor finance options specifically for new farmers and agricultural start-ups.

The Challenge for New Farmers

Most mainstream lenders require at least 2–3 years of trading history before they will consider an asset finance application. This leaves many new farmers and agricultural start-ups in a difficult position when they most need equipment access.

However, specialist lenders on our panel - particularly Aldermore - are specifically designed to help businesses that do not yet have an established trading track record.

Strengthening Your Application as a New Farmer

Business plan

A credible business plan showing projected income, expenditure and break-even is essential for start-up applications. Include BPS/SFI payment entitlements where applicable.

Larger deposit

A 20–25% deposit significantly reduces lender risk on a start-up application and is often the difference between approval and decline.

Personal credit

For a new business with no trading history, lenders place heavy weight on the personal credit history of the directors or sole trader. Clean personal credit is very helpful.

Grant funding

Evidence of Countryside Stewardship, SFI or other grant funding demonstrates income certainty and is viewed positively by lenders assessing a new farming business.

Young Farmer Schemes

Some lenders and manufacturer captive finance arms offer specific Young Farmer or Next Generation schemes with preferential rates or reduced deposit requirements. These are typically available through specific manufacturers (John Deere Financial, CNH Capital) rather than the open market.

An independent broker can identify whether any manufacturer promotional offers are available alongside open-market options, giving you the full picture before you commit.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a new farmer with no trading history get tractor finance?

Yes. Aldermore specialises in lending to start-up businesses including new farms. A 20–25% deposit, a credible business plan and clean personal credit are the key supporting factors. An independent broker will package your application appropriately.

What is the minimum deposit for a new farming business?

Aldermore typically requires 20–25% for start-up cases. More established lenders require 10% but also require 2–3 years of trading history. A larger deposit compensates for the absence of a trading track record.

Does my farming experience count even if my business is new?

Yes. If you have worked in agriculture previously - as an employee, farm manager or on a family farm - lenders take this into account. Evidence of practical experience reduces the perceived risk of a new farming business application.

Can I use a grant or SFI payment to support a tractor finance application?

Yes. Countryside Stewardship, SFI agreements and other grant payments demonstrate guaranteed future income and are viewed positively by lenders assessing new farming businesses. Include confirmation of these in your application.

Are there young farmer schemes for tractor finance?

Some manufacturer captive finance arms (notably John Deere Financial and CNH Capital) offer young farmer or next-generation schemes with preferential terms. These are available through dealer networks. An independent broker can compare these against open-market options to find the best total deal.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
