Credit Assessment - How Lenders Treat Each
Sole Trader
As a sole trader, you and your business are legally the same entity. Lenders assess your personal credit file and your self-employment income (via SA302 forms, self-assessment returns, or bank statements). There is no separate business credit file. Your personal credit history is therefore both your greatest asset and your greatest vulnerability in an application.
Limited Company
A limited company has its own legal identity and its own credit file (via Creditsafe, Experian Business, or Companies House data). Lenders assess both the company's credit and the directors' personal credit. For newer or smaller companies, directors' personal guarantees are almost always required, so a director's personal credit matters even for company finance.
Tax Treatment Comparison
| Factor | Sole Trader | Limited Company |
|---|---|---|
| Tax on profits | Income tax (20%/40%/45%) | Corporation tax (19%/25%) |
| AIA saving (higher rate) | Up to 45% on AIA claim | 25% max (at >£250k profits) |
| BIK on van | N/A (self-use) | £3,960 flat rate (2025/26) |
| Finance interest deduction | Income tax deduction | Corporation tax deduction |
Personal Liability
As a sole trader, you are personally liable for all business debts - including any deficiency if the vehicle is repossessed and sold for less than the outstanding finance. As a director of a limited company, your personal liability is limited to any personal guarantee you have signed. Without a personal guarantee, directors of limited companies are not personally liable for company debts.
Which Structure is Better for Finance?
There is no universal answer. A sole trader with excellent personal credit and strong self-employment income may get a better rate than a recently formed limited company with no trading history. An established limited company with audited accounts and strong balance sheet will typically access the best rates and terms. For most owner-drivers starting out, sole trader finance is simpler - consider incorporating later once trading history is established.
