Can You Finance a Lorry as an Owner-Driver?
Yes. Owner-drivers are a well-understood customer segment for commercial vehicle lenders. Whether you are setting up as a sole trader sub-contractor to a major haulier, or starting your own road transport business with one vehicle, lenders have appetite for these applications - provided you can demonstrate your income will comfortably service the finance payments.
What Lenders Look At
For owner-driver applications, lenders assess: your operator's licence (standard national or standard international, as appropriate); any existing contracts or letters of intent from customers; your personal credit history; your personal income (if sole trader) or the company's projected income; the deposit you can put down; and the vehicle itself - age, make, model and mileage all affect lender appetite and rate.
Typical Requirements
| Factor | Typical Requirement |
|---|---|
| Minimum deposit | 10% for new vehicles, 15–20% for used |
| Minimum credit score | No strict minimum - adverse credit lenders available |
| Operator's licence | Required before finance can be used operationally |
| Time in business | Start-up acceptable with some lenders (higher deposit required) |
| Personal guarantee | Usually required if trading through a limited company |
| Vehicle age | Most lenders fund vehicles up to 10 years old at end of term |
Hire Purchase - The Most Common Structure for Owner-Drivers
Hire purchase is overwhelmingly the preferred structure for owner-drivers buying their first HGV. You own the vehicle outright at the end of the agreement, you can claim AIA on the full value in year one, and the monthly payment profile is predictable. Most owner-driver HP agreements run over 48 or 60 months.
Getting Your Operator's Licence
You must hold a valid standard operator's licence before your vehicle can legally be operated as part of a hire-or-reward transport business. The O-licence application goes to the Traffic Commissioner for your region. Processing typically takes 9–13 weeks. You can apply for finance and have the vehicle purchased before your O-licence is granted - lenders are familiar with this sequence - but the vehicle cannot be operated commercially until the licence is in place.
Income Evidence
As a sole trader, lenders typically want to see 2–3 years of self-assessment tax returns or SA302s. If you are a new business, a letter of intent from a customer, a sub-contract agreement or evidence of prior employment in haulage can all strengthen your application. A realistic profit and loss projection prepared by an accountant helps.
