Van Finance for Tradespeople - Electricians, Plumbers, Builders & Sole Traders

Van finance for tradespeople. Sole trader van HP and lease for electricians, plumbers, builders and sole traders. Tax, deposits and lender requirements.

Van Finance for Self-Employed Tradespeople

For electricians, plumbers, builders, joiners, plasterers and other tradespeople, a reliable van is the backbone of the business. Whether you work as a sole trader or run a limited company with several vans, there are finance options to suit every situation. Lenders are very familiar with tradesperson applications and have streamlined processes for them.

Income Evidence for Self-Employed Trades

As a self-employed tradesperson, lenders want to see that your income comfortably covers the finance payments. The typical income evidence required is: SA302 forms from HMRC (last 2–3 years); self-assessment tax returns; accountant's certificate; or 6–12 months of bank statements for newer businesses. Some lenders accept bank statements alone for amounts under £25,000.

Best Van Finance Structures for Tradespeople

Hire Purchase

HP is the most popular choice for sole trader tradespeople. You own the van at the end, claim AIA in year 1 (reducing your income tax bill), and the monthly payment is predictable. A typical HP agreement on a £28,000 Transit Custom over 48 months at 8% APR costs approximately £570/month.

Finance Lease

Finance lease gives lower monthly payments and the full rental is deductible as a business expense. You do not own the van at the end. Suitable for tradespeople who want to upgrade frequently and are comfortable not owning the vehicle.

Specialist Van Fit-Out and Finance

If you need a specialist fit-out - racking, roof rack, cable drums, plumbing for a mobile workshop - many lenders will include the fit-out cost in the finance agreement, provided it is fitted by a recognised supplier and invoiced separately. This avoids the need to fund the fit-out separately in cash.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a self-employed tradesperson get van finance?

Yes. Self-employed tradespeople are a core customer segment for commercial vehicle lenders. You will typically need SA302 forms (last 2 years) or 12 months of bank statements to evidence income.

What deposit do tradespeople need for van finance?

10% is the standard for established tradespeople with clean credit. Newer businesses or those with adverse credit may be asked for 15–25%.

Can I include a van fit-out in my finance agreement?

Yes, if the fit-out is invoiced by a recognised supplier. Lenders can often include racking, roof racks and equipment as part of the financed amount, avoiding the need to fund it separately.

Is HP or lease better for a tradesperson's van?

HP is generally better if you want to own the van outright and claim AIA. Finance lease is better if you want lower monthly payments and plan to upgrade the van regularly. Most sole trader tradespeople choose HP for ownership and tax efficiency.

Can I get van finance as a day-one start-up tradesperson?

Yes, but with restrictions. Start-up tradespeople typically need a 20–30% deposit, and some lenders require at least 6 months of self-employment bank statements. Prior experience in your trade (as an employee) can help strengthen the application.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, vehicle and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your vehicle may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
