How to Finance an Industrial Robot: UK Business Guide

A practical guide for UK manufacturers and production businesses considering robot finance. Covers options, costs, tax and how to get the best deal.

Why Finance a Robot Rather Than Buy Outright?

Industrial robots typically cost between £50,000 and £500,000+ once integration and installation are included. Most businesses choose to finance rather than buy outright for three reasons:

  • Preserve working capital - keep cash in the business for stock, staffing and growth
  • Match payments to productivity gains - finance the robot from the savings and output it generates
  • Tax efficiency - HP finance combined with full expensing can generate significant first-year tax relief

Finance Options for Industrial Robots

Hire Purchase (HP)

Fixed monthly payments over 2–7 years. You own the robot at the end of the term. Qualifies for full expensing tax relief. Best for businesses that want ownership and tax efficiency.

Finance Lease

Lower monthly payments than HP. Lender retains legal ownership. Option to extend or return at end of term. Does not qualify for full expensing. Best if you want to upgrade regularly.

Operating Lease

Off-balance-sheet treatment for smaller businesses. Fixed term with residual value built in. Best for businesses with technology refresh cycles of 3–5 years.

Sale & Leaseback

Release cash from robots already owned by selling to a lender and leasing back. Useful if you own equipment outright and need working capital for the next phase of automation.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to finance an industrial robot in the UK?

Hire purchase (HP) is the most common structure for industrial robots, as it transfers ownership to the business at the end of the term and allows the asset to appear on the balance sheet. Finance lease is preferable if you want to upgrade at the end of the term. A whole-of-market broker will recommend the optimal structure for your specific situation.

How much deposit do I need for industrial robot finance?

Deposit requirements range from zero (with lenders such as Close Brothers, Aldermore and Nucleus) to 10–20% with premium lenders. The deposit required depends on your credit profile, the asset value and the lender selected.

Can I finance an industrial robot and installation costs together?

Yes. Many lenders will finance the full project cost including the robot hardware, integration, installation, programming and commissioning, provided these are included on a single or linked supplier invoice.

What is the maximum term for industrial robot finance?

Most UK lenders offer terms up to 7 years for industrial robots. Nucleus Commercial Finance offers up to 5 years. Longer terms reduce monthly payments but increase total interest paid.

Do I need to own the robot at the end to claim full expensing?

To claim full expensing (100% first-year capital allowances), the asset must be owned by the business - either purchased outright or acquired under hire purchase. Finance lease does not qualify for full expensing as the lender retains legal ownership.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, asset and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your asset may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
