Commercial Aviation Finance

Commercial Aviation Refinance UK

Equity release on owned fleet, debt restructuring and sale-and-leaseback for commercial operators.

Refinancing existing commercial aviation debt - or releasing equity from aircraft you own outright - can be a powerful tool for commercial operators seeking to optimise their capital structure, fund fleet expansion or improve working capital. Commercial aviation refinance covers several distinct strategies, each with different mechanics, costs and implications.

Equity release refinancing allows operators who have paid down their aviation finance (or own aircraft outright) to borrow against the asset's current market value. This releases cash that can be used for fleet expansion, maintenance reserve funding, working capital or business development. The facility is secured against the aircraft and typically assessed on the same criteria as a new acquisition finance.

Sale-and-leaseback involves selling an owned aircraft to a lessor (which may be a bank, specialist aviation lessor or structured vehicle) and immediately taking it back on lease. This converts a capital asset into a stream of lease payments, releasing the full aircraft value as cash. Sale-and-leaseback is widely used in commercial aviation to optimise capital allocation and reduce balance sheet leverage.

Debt restructuring may be appropriate where existing aviation finance is at above-market rates, has an unsuitable term, or includes restrictive covenants. Refinancing onto better terms requires a lender willing to replace the incumbent, which means understanding the breakage costs and prepayment terms of the existing facility before committing to refinance.

DBF assesses commercial aviation refinance requirements on a case-by-case basis, considering the existing facility terms, the aircraft's current market value, the operator's covenant, and the range of refinancing options available. We will only recommend refinancing where the financial case is clear.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if refinancing my commercial aircraft makes financial sense?

We carry out a detailed break-even analysis comparing your existing facility cost (including any early repayment charges) to the cost of the new facility over its term. If the saving over the period exceeds the costs of refinancing, it makes financial sense.

What is sale-and-leaseback and how does it work?

Sale-and-leaseback involves selling your aircraft to a lessor at current market value and simultaneously taking it back on lease. You receive the sale proceeds immediately and make lease payments for the agreed term. At the end of the lease, the aircraft returns to the lessor or you exercise a purchase option.

Can I refinance a commercial aircraft that I own outright?

Yes. Equity release refinancing allows you to borrow against an owned aircraft's market value. The facility is assessed based on current aircraft value, operator covenant and the intended use of the released funds.

What are the typical costs of commercial aviation refinance?

Costs include any early repayment charges on your existing facility, valuation/survey costs for the aircraft, arrangement fee on the new facility, and legal costs where SPV structures are involved. We provide a full cost analysis before you commit.

How quickly can commercial aviation refinance be completed?

Straightforward refinancing of a single aircraft can complete in 4–8 weeks. More complex transactions involving SPV restructuring or multiple aircraft may take 10–16 weeks. We manage the process and timeline on your behalf.

Asset finance for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, aircraft and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your aircraft may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
