About Barclays International Expat Mortgage

Unlike standard retail expat mortgage lenders, Barclays International is a private banking proposition. It is not a retail product available to all expat mortgage applicants - minimum asset thresholds apply, and the service is relationship-managed. For qualifying HNW expats, it provides a comprehensive and well-resourced mortgage service.

The options we compare

Barclays International - Private Banking

For qualifying HNW expats with significant investable assets, Barclays International provides a relationship-managed private banking service including mortgage products. The service is relationship-driven - terms are negotiated rather than published on a standard rate card.

Barclays International Mortgage Range

Residential and buy-to-let mortgages for non-UK residents at the private banking level. Larger loan sizes. More flexible underwriting for complex income structures and offshore asset profiles. Not restricted to the standard 75% LTV cap of retail expat lenders.

Jersey-Based Operations

Barclays International operates from Jersey - a Channel Islands jurisdiction with appropriate regulatory framework for private banking and offshore wealth management.

Barclays Global Relationship

For clients with a Barclays Premier or private banking relationship in another jurisdiction, Barclays International provides potential continuity of service. However, international banking entities are separate legally - a relationship in another country does not automatically provide access to the UK/Jersey terms.

When to Consider Barclays International

Barclays International is appropriate for: loan requirements above £1m, complex offshore income or asset structures, clients with existing Barclays private banking relationships globally, and HNW clients who prefer a bespoke relationship rather than a transactional specialist lender.

Alternatives for Non-HNW Expats

For expat mortgages below the Barclays International threshold, specialist retail lenders - HSBC Expat, Molo Finance, Skipton International - are more appropriate and often more rate-competitive. We direct clients to the right tier for their specific profile.

The Process

How We Help

01

HNW eligibility assessment

We confirm whether Barclays International is appropriate for your loan size and asset profile. For clients below the threshold, we immediately direct to specialist retail expat lenders.

02

Relationship approach

Barclays International is relationship-managed. As an intermediary with access to Barclays International, we facilitate the introductory approach and present the client profile to the relationship manager.

03

Bespoke terms negotiation

Unlike standard retail expat lenders, Barclays International terms are partly negotiated. We advise on the appropriate positioning of the application to maximise terms.

04

Completion

Private banking mortgage timelines are managed by the relationship manager. More complex cases may take longer than standard retail expat applications.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Barclays International available to all expat mortgage applicants?

No - Barclays International is a private banking service with minimum asset and income thresholds. It is not a retail product available to all non-UK resident mortgage applicants. For standard expat BTL and residential applications, specialist retail lenders (HSBC Expat, Molo Finance, Skipton International) are more appropriate and more accessible.

What is the minimum loan for a Barclays International mortgage?

Barclays International's private banking service typically begins to be appropriate for loan requirements of £500,000 or above. Below this level, specialist retail expat lenders provide competitive access without the private banking relationship requirement. Minimum investable asset thresholds also apply.

Is Barclays International the same as Barclays UK?

No - Barclays International (Jersey) is a separate legal entity from Barclays UK. Standard Barclays UK branches and products are not available to non-UK residents through standard channels. Barclays International provides international private banking and mortgage services from Jersey.

Can Barclays International be more flexible on income and LTV than specialist retail lenders?

Yes - private banking relationships typically allow more flexibility in underwriting than automated retail systems. For complex income structures (offshore trusts, business interests, multiple currencies), private banking assessment can accommodate what standard expat mortgage criteria cannot. However, this flexibility comes with the private banking asset threshold requirement.

Does an existing Barclays Premier relationship in another country help?

A global Barclays Premier relationship may provide a useful introduction to Barclays International, but the entities are separate legally. Terms for Barclays International (Jersey) are set by that entity, not by the previous jurisdiction. The relationship provides context and introduction - not guaranteed terms.
