Self-employed and sole trader buyers make up a huge proportion of UK commercial van purchases - plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, and other tradespeople who need a van to work. Many are turned down by high-street banks because they don't have three years of company accounts. Doulton Bridging Finance works with lenders who understand self-employment and assess applications based on your real income, not just PAYE payslips.

What Documentation Will I Need?

  • Last 2 years' SA302 tax calculations (from HMRC) or equivalent accountant's letter
  • Last 3 months' business bank statements
  • Proof of identity (passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement, dated within 3 months)
  • Details of the van: make, model, year, mileage, purchase price, dealer name
  • Some lenders may also ask for VAT returns if applicable
FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I get van finance if I've only been self-employed for 1 year?

Some lenders will consider applicants with as little as 12 months of self-employment, particularly if the application is supported by bank statements showing consistent income. The rate will reflect the shorter trading history. Contact us to discuss your situation.

Do I need a limited company to finance a van?

No. Sole traders and partnerships can finance vans directly. The van is registered in your name as an individual or as your trading name.

What if I have mixed employed and self-employed income?

Lenders assess your total income picture. If you have recently gone self-employed but have prior employment history, this can work in your favour. We'll help present your application in the best light.

Can I claim the van against tax as a sole trader?

Yes. As a sole trader you can claim capital allowances on a van purchased through HP, reducing your taxable profit. With finance lease, the monthly lease payments are typically an allowable business expense. Consult your accountant for personalised tax advice.
