Finance lease is a tax-efficient way for VAT-registered businesses to finance commercial vans. You have full use of the van throughout the agreement, monthly payments are lower than hire purchase, and VAT is spread over the term rather than paid upfront. At the end you can sell the van to a third party, hand it back, or refinance. As an independent broker, we compare finance lease deals from multiple lenders.

How Van Finance Lease Works

  • The lender buys the van and leases it to you for an agreed term
  • You make monthly lease payments (plus VAT - which you can typically reclaim if VAT-registered)
  • You are responsible for maintenance, insurance and running costs
  • At the end of the term: sell the van to a third party (lender takes the proceeds less a small share), hand back, or refinance
  • No ownership - the lender remains the legal owner throughout
  • No mileage restrictions

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I reclaim VAT on finance lease payments?

If your business is VAT-registered and the van is used exclusively for business purposes, you can typically reclaim 100% of the VAT on lease payments. If there is any private use, the reclaimable portion is reduced. Consult your accountant.

Who is responsible for maintenance on a finance lease?

You are. Unlike contract hire (which can include a maintenance package), finance lease is a pure funding product. You arrange and pay for all servicing and repairs.

What happens at the end of a finance lease?

Typically: you arrange a sale of the van to a third party, the sale proceeds go to the lender, and you receive a rebate of rental (typically 95–97% of the net sale proceeds). Alternatively you can hand back or refinance.

Is there a balloon payment on a finance lease?

Not in the traditional sense. Finance lease agreements set a "residual value" - the expected value of the van at term end. Your monthly payments are based on the difference between the original value and this residual. The residual is settled through the end-of-term sale.

Can a sole trader use finance lease?

Finance lease is primarily a business product and works best for VAT-registered businesses that can reclaim the VAT. Sole traders who are VAT-registered can use it; those who are not VAT-registered may find hire purchase more cost-effective.
