Hire purchase is the most straightforward way to finance a commercial van - fixed monthly payments over an agreed term, and you own the van outright at the end. For businesses that want to build equity in their vehicles and have no mileage restrictions, hire purchase is typically the right route. As an independent broker, we compare hire purchase deals from multiple lenders to find the best terms for your business.

How Van Hire Purchase Works

  • You choose your van (new or used, from a dealer or private seller)
  • Deposit paid (typically 10–20%; some lenders offer 0% deposit / 100% LTV)
  • Fixed monthly payments over your chosen term (typically 24–84 months)
  • You use and maintain the van throughout - it is treated as your asset for tax purposes
  • At the end of the agreement you own the van outright (or a small "option to purchase" fee may apply)
  • No mileage restrictions - unlike contract hire or leasing

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I do van hire purchase if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed applicants can get van HP. Lenders typically ask for 2 years of accounts or SA302s, though some specialist lenders work with applicants who have less trading history.

Is van hire purchase regulated?

Commercial HP (van used wholly for business) is typically not regulated by the FCA. Consumer HP for personal use is regulated. We'll advise on which applies to your situation.

Can I claim capital allowances on a van I've bought on HP?

Yes. Under hire purchase you are treated as the owner from day one, so you can claim the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) on the van's full purchase price in the year you take it.

What happens if I want to settle the HP early?

You can settle an HP agreement early. A settlement figure will apply - typically the remaining balance plus interest to the settlement date, less a statutory rebate. Contact us to discuss.

Can I finance a van at auction on HP?

Some lenders will fund auction purchases. The process is slightly different and we need to move quickly. Contact us in advance of the auction if possible.
