About Skipton International Expat Mortgage

However, a critical 2026 development: CRD VI regulatory changes effective 11 July 2026 caused Skipton to withdraw from new EU-resident mortgage applications from 31 March 2026. If you are based in an EU country, Skipton is no longer available for new applications.

What Skipton International Offers

UK buy-to-let mortgages for non-UK residents and UK expats. Guernsey-based, 20+ years of expat lending experience. Buy-to-let only - Skipton International cannot provide mortgages intended for personal occupation. Available to non-EU residents only since March 2026.

Skipton's Key Features

Up to 75% LTV on UK BTL properties. Free standard valuation and standard conveyancing (a genuinely differentiated offer). Applications from UK nationals and non-UK nationals globally (subject to country acceptance list). Fast completions - as little as 16 days from application for remortgages.

Skipton BTL Criteria

Rental income must cover the mortgage payment. Minimum property values apply. Standard BTL rental coverage requirements. The property must not be intended as a personal residence for the borrower or close family during the mortgage period.

Countries Skipton Accepts

Skipton accepts applications from a wide range of countries outside the EU. Major expat hubs - UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, USA, Canada - are typically on the acceptance list. However, country acceptance lists change regularly. We confirm the current position for your specific country before any application.

Comparing Skipton Against the Market

As an independent broker, we compare Skipton International against HSBC Expat, Molo Finance, and all other relevant specialist lenders. Skipton is a strong option for many non-EU-resident BTL cases - but it is not always the best rate or best terms. We compare before recommending.

If You Are EU-Resident: Alternatives to Skipton

Since Skipton's March 2026 withdrawal from EU-resident applications, the effective alternatives include HSBC Expat (for those who can open an HSBC Expat account), Molo Finance, and some specialist channels. Contact us for the current EU-resident lender shortlist.

The Process

How We Help

01

EU vs non-EU confirmation

First step is confirming your country of residence. For non-EU residents, Skipton remains an option. For EU residents, we immediately identify the alternative specialist lenders.

02

Property and rental assessment

We confirm the property type, rental income, and required loan amount against Skipton's current criteria. Their rental coverage requirements and minimum property values are confirmed before application.

03

Skipton vs whole market

We compare Skipton's terms against HSBC Expat, Molo Finance, and other relevant lenders. Skipton is often competitive - but not always. We recommend on the basis of the comparison.

04

Application

We submit to Skipton International as an authorised intermediary. Skipton's direct-to-underwriter approach means fast decisions.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Skipton International still doing expat mortgages in 2026?

Yes - Skipton International still offers expat buy-to-let mortgages for non-EU residents. The key 2026 change is their withdrawal from EU-resident applications (from 31 March 2026) due to CRD VI regulatory changes. For UK expats in the UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, USA, and other non-EU locations, Skipton International remains an active specialist lender.

Why did Skipton International stop lending to EU residents?

CRD VI (Capital Requirements Directive VI) is an EU regulatory framework that tightened the rules governing how non-EU financial institutions (including Guernsey-based Skipton International) can provide services to EU-resident clients. The additional compliance cost and administrative burden made it commercially unviable for Skipton to continue new EU-resident mortgage applications. They continue to service existing EU-resident mortgages but cannot offer new products or product transfers to EU-resident customers.

What are the alternatives to Skipton International for EU expats?

The primary alternatives following Skipton's withdrawal are: HSBC Expat (Jersey-based, requires an HSBC Expat bank account, both residential and BTL), Molo Finance (digital challenger specifically for non-UK residents, competitive BTL rates), and some specialist channel lenders that we access as a whole-of-market broker. Contact us for the current EU-resident lender shortlist specific to your country.

Does Skipton International offer residential mortgages for expats?

No - Skipton International explicitly offers UK buy-to-let mortgages only. Their criteria state that they cannot provide a mortgage if the borrower or a close family member intends to live in the property during the mortgage period. For expat residential mortgages (future home purchase or UK base), other specialist lenders are required.

How quickly can Skipton International complete an expat mortgage?

Skipton International's streamlined process completes expat BTL remortgages in as little as 16 days from receipt of application and 4-6 weeks for purchase mortgages - though this varies by case complexity. This speed is a genuine competitive advantage for clients who need to complete quickly.
