Supercar Finance Guide

HP vs PCP vs Lease Purchase for Supercars - Which Is Right for You?

The three main supercar finance structures - hire purchase, PCP, and lease purchase - work differently and suit different buyer circumstances. This guide explains which structure fits which situation.

Hire purchase (HP) - own it at the end

How it works: You pay a deposit (typically 10-25%), then fixed monthly payments over the agreed term (usually 3-5 years). At the end of the final payment, the car is legally yours. No balloon payment, no GFV decision, no return option.

Best for: Buyers who want to own the car outright at end of term. Buyers who drive high mileage (HP has no mileage restrictions). Business buyers claiming capital allowances. Classic and collector car buyers where the plan is long-term ownership.

Monthly payments: Higher than PCP or lease purchase for the same deposit, because you are repaying the full depreciation over the term plus interest.

Key benefit: Simplicity and certainty. No end-of-term decisions to make.

Lease purchase (balloon) - lower payments, large end payment

How it works: You pay a deposit, lower monthly payments than HP, and a larger final 'balloon' payment deferred to the end of the term. The balloon is agreed at the start - typically 30-50% of the car's original value.

At the end of the term you have three options: pay the balloon (own the car), refinance the balloon into a new agreement (extend the ownership), or sell the car and use the proceeds to clear the balloon.

Best for: Buyers who want the lowest monthly payments. Buyers who are uncertain whether they want to own the car long-term. Buyers who anticipate upgrading at end of term.

Monthly payments: Lower than HP for the same deposit because only part of the depreciation is repaid monthly - the rest is deferred to the balloon.

Key risk: If the car's value falls below the balloon amount at end of term, you face negative equity - you owe more than the car is worth. For supercars with strong residual values, this risk is low but not zero.

PCP - the manufacturer finance structure

How it works: Similar to lease purchase, but with a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) rather than a balloon. The GFV is the amount the manufacturer or lender guarantees the car will be worth at end of term. If the car is worth more than the GFV at end of term, the equity belongs to you. If it is worth less, you can hand it back and the lender absorbs the loss.

Best for: Buyers who want the flexibility to hand back the car without financial risk. Buyers using manufacturer finance at a franchised dealer.

For supercars specifically: PCP is less commonly used by specialist independent lenders - most specialist supercar finance uses HP or lease purchase. PCP structures are more common through manufacturer finance arms (Ferrari FS, Lamborghini FS, Porsche Bank).

Mileage restriction: PCP typically comes with a maximum mileage agreement. Exceeding the agreed mileage at end of term incurs a penalty charge. HP and lease purchase have no mileage restrictions.

Which structure to choose

Choose hire purchase if: You want to own the car outright at end of term. You drive high mileage. You are buying a classic or collector car for long-term ownership. You are a business claiming capital allowances (HP provides the clearest capital allowance position).

Choose lease purchase if: You want the lowest possible monthly payments. You are comfortable with the balloon decision at end of term. You plan to sell or upgrade the car at end of term rather than owning it permanently.

Choose PCP if: You are using manufacturer finance at a franchised dealer. You want the certainty of handing back without negative equity risk. You have an agreed mileage you will stay within.

For most supercar buyers: Lease purchase is the most common structure from independent specialist lenders - it provides lower monthly payments while retaining full use of the car. HP is the right choice where long-term ownership is certain.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from PCP to HP mid-term?

You can settle a PCP or HP early at any time by paying the settlement figure. You cannot convert between product types mid-agreement without settling the existing agreement and starting a new one.

Is lease purchase the same as a finance lease?

No - lease purchase is a consumer credit product where you own the car at end of term (after paying the balloon). A finance lease is more commonly used for business assets where the lender retains title throughout and you make monthly payments for use of the asset.

Does the finance structure affect capital allowances?

Yes - for business-use vehicles, hire purchase provides the clearest capital allowance position: the business claims allowances on the full cost of the vehicle. Finance lease payments are typically deducted as an operating expense rather than asset purchase. Specialist tax advice is recommended.

What happens if the car is in an accident while on finance?

Your specialist automotive insurance covers the repair or total loss. The lender is noted as an interested party and the insurance pays the outstanding finance first if it is a total loss. Any surplus goes to you; any shortfall must be met by you (or by GAP insurance if you have it).

Is GAP insurance worth getting for supercar finance?

GAP insurance covers the difference between the insurance payout (current market value) and the outstanding finance balance in the event of a total loss. For supercars with strong residual values, the gap is typically small - but for older supercars or those with balloon structures, GAP insurance provides useful protection.
