Many of the world's best-value business jets are on N-registration (FAA) in the United States. Importing and re-registering to G-reg opens up the full UK finance market and simplifies day-to-day UK operation. We handle import finance transactions regularly and can guide you through the process from purchase agreement to drawdown.
Why import an N-reg jet?
N-reg jets can represent significant value - particularly for aircraft that were originally sold into the US market at lower prices. The US fleet is also larger, giving you more choice. However, operating an N-reg aircraft primarily in the UK can create regulatory complications under EASA rules.
The G-reg conversion process
Converting from N-reg to G-reg (UK CAA registration) typically takes 4–12 weeks and requires a CAA airworthiness check, modification standard review and, for older types, potential modifications to meet UK/EASA requirements. Budget for professional costs of £15,000–£50,000+ depending on aircraft type.
Import VAT
Importing a business jet into the UK from outside the UK (including from the US) typically triggers UK import VAT at 20%. If the aircraft is used exclusively for business purposes that qualify under HMRC's rules, input VAT may be recoverable. Specialist aviation tax advice is essential before committing to an import.
Finance for an N-reg aircraft
Some UK lenders will finance an N-reg aircraft operated in the UK, but may require G-reg conversion as a condition of drawdown or impose a lower LTV. Others will only lend on G-reg assets. We know which lenders are comfortable with each scenario.
