Buying Your First Helicopter - Finance Guide

The transition from fixed-wing flying to helicopter ownership is one of the most exciting steps in a pilot's journey. Helicopters offer a freedom and versatility that fixed-wing aircraft simply cannot match - landing in fields, rooftops, remote moorings and your own garden (planning permission permitting). But they are also more expensive to buy, maintain and insure than comparable fixed-wing types, which makes getting the finance right from the outset particularly important.

First-time helicopter buyers are well served by the UK aviation finance market. The most popular entry-level types - the Robinson R44, the Cabri G2 and the R22 - are all well understood by lenders, have active secondary markets and hold their value reasonably well. This means lenders are generally willing to finance them, and the terms available to first-time buyers are not dramatically different from those available to experienced helicopter owners, provided the deposit and financial profile are adequate.

Doulton Bridging Finance works with first-time helicopter buyers regularly. We know which lenders are most welcoming to new-to-type borrowers, how to present your application in the best light, and how to structure the finance to keep your monthly cost manageable while you settle into helicopter ownership.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance my first helicopter with no helicopter ownership history?

Yes. Not having owned a helicopter before does not disqualify you from finance. Lenders assess first-time helicopter buyers on the same fundamentals as any borrower - financial strength, deposit size, intended use and aircraft type - and most mainstream aviation lenders will consider first-time buyers. Where it helps is if you have a track record of owning other aircraft (particularly fixed-wing) or if you are an experienced pilot. A strong deposit of 25–30% also significantly improves your chances.

Do I need a PPL(H) before I can finance a helicopter?

You do not legally need to hold a PPL(H) or any pilot licence before applying for helicopter finance. However, most lenders - particularly those with dedicated aviation teams - will want to understand how the aircraft will be flown and by whom. If you are purchasing before completing your PPL(H), it is worth being transparent about your training timeline and, where possible, demonstrating that the aircraft will be maintained in airworthy condition and insured appropriately during the training period.

What helicopter should I buy first?

The Robinson R44 Raven II is the most popular first helicopter for private buyers in the UK, offering a balance of performance, running costs and lender familiarity. The R22 Beta II is a lower-cost option popular with those completing their PPL(H) training. The Guimbal Cabri G2 is increasingly chosen as an R22 alternative with better safety characteristics. For those seeking a turbine helicopter as a first purchase, the Robinson R66 Turbine is an accessible entry point, followed by the Bell 206 JetRanger and the Airbus H120.

What deposit will a lender require from a first-time helicopter buyer?

First-time helicopter buyers should typically budget for a deposit of 20–30% of the purchase price. A 20% deposit (80% LTV) is achievable for buyers with strong personal finances and a straightforward purchase. 25–30% is more commonly required where there is limited aviation ownership history or where the aircraft type is less familiar to the lender. A larger deposit reduces the lender's risk and can also improve the interest rate offered.

What is the most affordable helicopter to finance?

The most affordable UK-registered helicopters to finance are typically ex-training Robinson R22s, which can be found in the £40,000–£80,000 range depending on hours and specification. Ex-training R44s are available from £130,000–£200,000. Monthly finance payments on an R44 at £175,000 with a 25% deposit over 7 years would be approximately £2,100–£2,400 per month depending on the rate. This should be considered alongside significant ongoing running costs - maintenance, insurance, hangarage and fuel.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, aircraft and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your aircraft may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
