Helicopter Finance Guide

How to Finance a Helicopter in the UK

Everything you need to know about helicopter finance - from choosing the right product to completing your purchase. Updated October 2026.

Piston vs Turbine: How It Affects Your Finance

The single biggest factor in helicopter finance is whether your aircraft is piston or turbine-engined. Turbine helicopters cost more but attract lower interest rates because lenders see them as higher-quality, more liquid assets.

Piston Helicopters

  • Robinson R22, R44 (and the turbine R66)
  • Lower purchase prices (£50k–£300k)
  • Rates typically 7.9%–15%
  • More lenders available, lower minimums
  • Best lenders: Close Brothers, Arkle, Ultimate

Turbine Helicopters

  • Bell 206, Airbus H125/H130, Leonardo AW109
  • Higher prices (£250k–£3m+)
  • Rates from 5.5%–11.5%
  • Fewer lenders, higher minimums
  • Best lenders: HSBC, NatWest, Lombard

CAA Airworthiness Requirements

All UK lenders require your helicopter to hold a current Certificate of Airworthiness (CofA) issued or validated by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or EASA. Before completing finance, you should:

  • Commission an independent engineer's inspection (pre-purchase inspection or PPI)
  • Verify the aircraft's maintenance records are complete and uninterrupted
  • Confirm CAA registration and that the CofA is current or renewable
  • Check for any outstanding Airworthiness Directives (ADs)

Hangarage and Running Costs

Finance covers the purchase price only. You'll need to budget separately for ongoing costs:

  • Hangarage: typically £3,000–£15,000 per year depending on location
  • Insurance: £2,000–£20,000+ depending on hull value and pilot experience
  • Maintenance: 100-hour and annual inspections; parts and labour
  • Landing fees and fuel

Worked Example: Robinson R44 at £180,000

Finance Products Explained

  • Hire Purchase (HP): You pay instalments over an agreed term. The lender owns the helicopter until the final payment, then ownership transfers to you. Most common product for piston helicopters.
  • Secured Loan / Chattel Mortgage: You own the helicopter from day one with the lender holding a charge. Common for turbine aircraft. Typically cheaper rates.
  • Finance Lease: You lease the helicopter for a fixed term. No automatic ownership transfer but you benefit from VAT efficiency if VAT-registered.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CAA airworthiness certificate to finance a helicopter?

Yes. All lenders require the helicopter to hold a current Certificate of Airworthiness (CofA) or Permit to Fly at the point of purchase.

Can I include hangarage costs in helicopter finance?

No - lenders finance the aircraft purchase only. Hangarage, insurance and maintenance must be budgeted separately.

What's the difference between HP and a secured loan for a helicopter?

Under HP, the lender owns the helicopter until the final payment. Under a secured loan, you own it from day one with the lender holding a charge. Secured loans are typically cheaper for turbine aircraft.

Can I refinance a helicopter I already own?

Yes. Several lenders will refinance an existing helicopter to release capital or restructure your borrowing.

What insurance do I need for a financed helicopter?

Lenders require comprehensive aviation insurance (hull and liability) with the lender noted as loss payee. Minimum hull cover is typically 110% of the outstanding loan balance.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, aircraft and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your aircraft may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
