Importing and Financing a US Helicopter in the UK
The United States remains the world's largest helicopter market, and many excellent aircraft - particularly Robinson piston types, Bell turbines and AgustaWestland models - are available on the US market at prices that make importation attractive despite the additional costs involved. Understanding those costs, and finding a lender willing to support the import process, is where specialist broker advice adds the most value.
The key challenges for imported helicopter finance are registration and security. Most UK lenders want to take a registered mortgage over a UK G-registered aircraft. During the period between purchase and CAA registration, the aircraft sits on the US N-register - and not all lenders are comfortable holding N-reg security. We work with the lenders who are, and can structure your finance to match the conversion timeline.
Import VAT, customs duty, survey costs, CAA conversion fees, maintenance actions identified during conversion, and potential equipment upgrades to meet UK CAA requirements all need to be budgeted carefully. We can help you build a total-cost-of-acquisition picture that allows you to size your finance correctly from the outset.
| Finance Type | Typical Rate | Typical LTV | Typical Term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Import Bridge Finance (N-reg) | 7.5% – 10% | Up to 70% | 3–12 months |
| Hire Purchase (post G-reg) | 6.5% – 8.5% | Up to 80% | 3–10 years |
| Finance Lease (post G-reg) | 6.5% – 8.5% | Up to 75% | 3–10 years |
| Refinance post-conversion | 6.5% – 8.5% | Up to 80% | 3–10 years |
Import Finance Process
Step 1: Pre-purchase Survey
Commission a UK-authorised engineer to complete a pre-purchase inspection in the US before committing to buy. This identifies maintenance requirements that will affect conversion costs and the aircraft's UK value.
Step 2: Import Finance
Arrange import or bridge finance to fund the purchase, import costs and conversion work. Some lenders fund the full conversion budget in a single facility; others require staged drawdown against conversion milestones.
Step 3: CAA Conversion
Your UK CAMO or Part-M organisation manages the CAA conversion process, including the technical file review, any maintenance actions required and the application for a UK Certificate of Airworthiness.
Step 4: Refinance or Term Facility
Once the aircraft is on the G-register, refinance onto a standard term hire purchase or finance lease facility at a competitive long-term rate. The bridge lender is repaid and the aircraft is now standard UK-registered security.
