Helicopter Training School Finance

ATO fleet finance for helicopter training schools. Finance for R44, R22, Cabri G2, Bell 505 and all major training types. Whole-of-market broker for flight training organisations.

Fleet Finance for Helicopter Training Organisations

Running a helicopter training school is capital-intensive. A fleet of three Robinson R44s represents an investment of nearly £1 million at current prices - and that fleet will need cyclical replacement as airframes accumulate hours and overhaul costs increase. The right finance structure can make fleet management more predictable and free up working capital that would otherwise be tied up in depreciating assets.

Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) holding CAA approval for PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(H) training are well positioned to access fleet-level helicopter finance. Lenders with experience in the training sector understand the revenue model - student hours multiplied by an hourly dual rate - and can assess cash flow from training operations with confidence.

Doulton Bridging Finance has placed fleet finance for training operations ranging from single-helicopter PPL(H) schools to multi-base ATOs with 10+ aircraft on strength. We know which lenders are most competitive for training fleet deals and how to present your application in the format they require.

Common Training Helicopter Types We Finance

Robinson R44 Raven II

The most popular training helicopter in the UK. Strong residual values and an active secondary market make the R44 attractive to lenders. Rates from 6.6% for established ATOs.

Guimbal Cabri G2

The Cabri G2 is the modern two-seat trainer preferred by many schools for its safety features and lower operating costs compared to the R22. Lenders are comfortable with its residual value profile.

Bell 505 Jet Ranger X

Increasingly used for turbine transition and commercial training. The Bell 505 commands higher purchase prices and requires specialist lenders, but its residual value and commercial applicability make it financeable at competitive rates.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a helicopter training school get fleet finance?

Yes. Specialist lenders offer fleet finance facilities for helicopter training schools, allowing an ATO to purchase multiple aircraft under a single facility rather than negotiating individual deals for each. Fleet finance typically delivers better rates, consolidated security and simpler administration. Lenders assess fleet applications on the ATO's training volume, financial history and the residual value of the aircraft types being purchased.

Do lenders require ATO approval?

Lenders do not always mandate ATO approval as a strict eligibility condition, but holding a CAA-approved ATO status for PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(H) training significantly strengthens your application. It demonstrates regulatory oversight, structured operations and a guaranteed market for the aircraft - all of which support lender confidence. New training schools without ATO approval may find it harder to access fleet-level financing.

What helicopters are popular for training?

The Robinson R44 Raven II is the most widely used helicopter training type in the UK and is the most familiar to lenders. The Robinson R22 is still used for early PPL(H) training. The Guimbal Cabri G2 has grown in popularity as an R22 alternative with modern safety features. The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X is increasingly used for turbine transition training. Lenders are comfortable with residual values for all of these types.

What deposit is typical for training helicopter fleet finance?

For established ATOs with strong trading histories, deposits of 15–20% are typically achievable on well-known training types such as the R44 and Cabri G2. Newer schools may need to provide 25–30% deposit. For high-hours or older training aircraft, lenders may require 30–35% deposit to mitigate residual value risk.

Can I refinance an existing training fleet to release equity?

Yes. If your training fleet is owned outright - or financed with residual equity remaining - it may be possible to refinance to release cash for further aircraft purchases, infrastructure investment or working capital. Lenders will assess the current value of the fleet (typically via an independent aviation surveyor), the remaining useful life of the aircraft, and your school's financial position before offering terms on a refinance.

Finance taken for business purposes is not regulated by the FCA. Rates shown are indicative as at October 2026 and depend on credit profile, term, aircraft and deposit. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. Your aircraft may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.
