Helicopter Finance Product Types Explained
There are three main product types used to finance helicopters in the UK: hire purchase (HP), finance lease and operating lease. Each has different implications for ownership, accounting, tax and flexibility. Understanding the differences before you apply helps you choose the structure that best fits your circumstances - and means you are not surprised by the terms when the offer arrives.
Hire Purchase (HP)
Hire purchase is the most straightforward helicopter finance structure. You agree to buy the helicopter by making regular monthly payments over a fixed term. At the end of the term - or on payment of a small option-to-purchase fee - legal title transfers to you. During the finance period, the lender holds a registered mortgage over the aircraft on the UK CAA register as security.
HP is the preferred structure for private buyers, owner-pilots and businesses that want to own their helicopter outright. Capital allowances are available from day one, which can be tax-efficient for businesses. Monthly payments are fixed, making budgeting straightforward.
Finance Lease
A finance lease is economically similar to HP - you make regular payments, and you bear substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership during the term - but legal title never transfers. The lender (lessor) retains title throughout. At the end of the term, you typically have three options: extend the lease at a peppercorn rent, arrange the sale of the aircraft to a third party and retain most of the proceeds, or hand the aircraft back.
Finance leases are commonly used by businesses that want the economic substance of ownership but prefer the accounting flexibility of a lease structure. Under IFRS 16, finance leases are recognised on the balance sheet as both an asset and a liability - so the off-balance-sheet advantage has largely disappeared for IFRS reporters.
Operating Lease
An operating lease is essentially a rental. You use the helicopter for a defined period, make regular rental payments, and return it to the lessor at the end. You bear no residual value risk - if the helicopter is worth less than expected at lease end, that is the lessor's problem. Operating leases involve higher monthly payments than HP or finance lease because the lessor is pricing residual value risk into the rental.
Operating leases suit operators who need to use a helicopter for a defined period, want maximum flexibility to upgrade, and prefer not to be exposed to depreciation risk. Under IFRS 16, most operating leases must now be shown on the balance sheet as a right-of-use asset and lease liability.

Which Type Suits You?
Choose HP if…
You want to own the helicopter outright, you are a private buyer or owner-pilot, or you want to claim capital allowances from day one. HP is the simplest product and the most common choice for private helicopter buyers in the UK.
Choose Finance Lease if…
You are a business buyer who wants flexibility at the end of the term, or your accountant recommends it for tax or accounting reasons. Finance lease is common for commercial operators who rotate their fleet periodically.
Choose Operating Lease if…
You need the helicopter for a defined period, want to hand it back without residual value risk, or are an IFRS reporter who wants to minimise the impact on reported gearing. Operating leases are most common for large commercial operators and offshore fleets.
