Euro 6 Upgrade Finance: hire purchase, finance lease and contract hire arranged by an independent, whole-of-market broker. No obligation.

Written by David Doulton · Last updated November 2026

Euro 6 is the current exhaust emissions standard for new heavy goods vehicles in the UK, reducing NOx and particulate matter emissions significantly compared to Euro 5. With Clean Air Zones (CAZ) now operating in Birmingham, Bath and other UK cities - and more planned - operating non-Euro 6 HGVs is increasingly costly through daily charges. Financing a Euro 6 upgrade or replacement is now a commercial necessity for many operators.

UK Clean Air Zones - Current and Planned

  • Birmingham - CAZ operational; daily charges for non-Euro 6 HGVs
  • Bath - CAZ operational; daily charges for non-compliant vehicles
  • Bristol - CAZ planned
  • Portsmouth - CAZ operational
  • Bradford - CAZ planned
  • London ULEZ - covers Greater London; heavy vehicles have separate standard

Finance Options for Upgrading to Euro 6

Option 1 - Replace with new Euro 6 truck

Most straightforward. Full HP or finance lease on a new vehicle. Part-exchange your old vehicle to reduce deposit requirement.

Option 2 - Replace with used Euro 6 truck

Lower capital cost. Used Euro 6 trucks in good condition are well-valued on the market. Finance available from multiple lenders. Good for operators who want compliance without new truck pricing.

Option 3 - Retrofit

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) retrofits for pre-Euro 6 engines are available from DVSA-approved retrofitters. Some lenders will finance retrofit costs, though this is more complex to arrange. We can discuss options.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is Euro 6 for trucks?

Euro 6 is an EU/UK exhaust emission standard for new heavy vehicles, introducing strict limits on NOx (nitrogen oxides) and PM (particulate matter). Euro 6 trucks typically have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with AdBlue.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) is a urea-water solution injected into the exhaust of Euro 6 diesel trucks to reduce NOx emissions. Euro 6 trucks carry an AdBlue tank that must be replenished regularly.

When did Euro 6 become mandatory for new trucks?

Euro 6 became mandatory for new heavy vehicle type approvals in 2013 and for all new registrations in 2014 in the EU/UK. Pre-2014 trucks may be Euro 5 or earlier.

Can I get a grant for Euro 6 upgrade?

DVSA and local authorities have historically offered grants for retrofitting or replacing non-compliant vehicles. Availability and amounts change - check current gov.uk guidance. We can help you understand how grant funding interacts with your finance structure.
