Finance Types We Arrange

Hire Purchase (HP)

Own the truck outright at the end of the agreement. Most popular for owner-operators and sole traders. Deposit typically 10–20%; balloon payment option available to reduce monthly outgoings.

Finance Lease

Lower monthly payments than HP, because part of the cost is deferred to a residual value at the end of the term. No automatic ownership transfer - you either extend the lease, sell the asset and return a proportion of the proceeds, or hand it back.

Contract Hire (Operating Lease)

Fixed monthly cost including maintenance packages available. Best for predictable cost management and businesses that prefer not to own HGVs on the balance sheet. Vehicle returned at end of term.

Sale and Leaseback

Release equity from trucks you already own. The lender buys your vehicle and leases it back to you at a fixed monthly cost. Useful for improving cash flow without disrupting operations.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Operator Licence to get truck finance?

For trucks over 3.5t GVW used for hire or reward, an O-licence is required by law. Most lenders will want to see your O-licence or evidence of an application in progress. We can still discuss finance options if you are in the application process.

Can I finance a used truck?

Yes. Most lenders will finance used trucks up to 10 years old, and some specialist lenders will consider older assets for strong credits. Used rates are typically 0.3–0.5% higher than new.

Can a sole trader or new business get truck finance?

Yes, though criteria vary by lender. Some lenders require 2+ years trading history and filed accounts. Others, including Aldermore and certain specialist lenders, will consider newer businesses with appropriate deposits.

How much deposit do I need?

Typically 10–20% for most truck finance. Higher deposits can unlock better rates or help where trading history is limited.

How long does approval take?

For straightforward applications with strong trading history, decisions can come back within 24–48 hours. Complex applications or large fleet deals may take longer.
