Sale and leaseback allows a haulier to sell trucks they own outright to a finance company, who then leases them back at a fixed monthly payment. The haulier continues to operate the vehicles as normal but receives a lump sum of working capital. This can fund fleet expansion, reduce debt, or provide working capital for the business without disrupting operations.

How HGV Sale and Leaseback Works

Step 1 - Valuation

The finance company values your truck(s). They will base this on market value, age, mileage and condition. You will receive less than the retail value - this is normal, as the discount reflects the finance company's risk and profit.

Step 2 - Agreement

A finance lease or HP agreement is put in place. The finance company buys the vehicles from you at the agreed value. You receive the funds.

Step 3 - Leaseback

The vehicles are immediately leased back to you under the agreed terms. You continue to operate them as before. Monthly payments begin.

Step 4 - End of term

At end of the lease, you can typically re-purchase the vehicles for a nominal amount, return them, or extend the lease.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much of my truck's value will I receive in a sale and leaseback?

Typically 70–90% of current market value, depending on the asset condition, age and lender appetite. Newer trucks in excellent condition attract the best advance rates.

Can I do sale and leaseback on a truck with outstanding finance?

If the truck already has HP or lease finance outstanding, the proceeds from the sale-and-leaseback must first repay the existing finance. You would receive only the equity (value minus outstanding balance). This is called a "settlement and refinance."

What lenders do sale and leaseback on trucks?

Close Brothers, Haydock Finance and specialist asset finance lenders are active in HGV sale and leaseback. We manage the whole process on your behalf.

Is sale and leaseback the same as refinancing?

Similar but not identical. Refinancing replaces one HP agreement with another on the same asset. Sale and leaseback changes the ownership structure - you sell the asset and lease it back. The practical effect on monthly cash flow can be similar.
