Low-loaders - step-frame or swan-neck trailers with a lowered deck - are used for transporting tall or heavy plant, construction machinery and abnormal loads that cannot be carried on a standard flatbed. Available as rigid trucks (typically 26t–32t with a lowered body) or semi-trailer combinations (44t+), low-loaders require specialist HGV lenders who understand their operating economics and residual values.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special licence for a low-loader?

Category CE (artic) licence for semi-trailer combinations. Low-loaders carrying abnormal indivisible loads (AILs) also require STGO category approval, relevant police notifications and potentially an escort vehicle.

What is an extendable low-loader?

An extendable (telescopic) low-loader can extend its deck length to carry longer loads. These are more expensive than fixed-length variants and have a more specialist resale market.

Can I finance a used low-loader?

Yes. Used low-loaders in good condition are financed by specialist lenders. Condition and history matter more for specialist assets than for standard trucks.
