Refrigerated trucks (also called fridge lorries, chilled or frozen distribution vehicles) are essential to the UK food supply chain. Temperature-controlled haulage ranges from ambient (non-frozen, controlled atmosphere) to deep-freeze (-25°C). The refrigeration unit - typically a Thermo King or Carrier unit - adds significant cost to the vehicle but is financed as part of the whole asset. Refrigeration Body Types
Single-temperature: one temperature zone; most common for frozen or chilled-only operations
Multi-temperature: divided compartments at different temperatures - chilled, frozen, ambient
Insulated curtainsider: lighter insulation for ambient/chilled - not frozen
Fridge trailer (artic): full-length semi-trailer with integral fridge unit
Tail-lift fridge: common for multi-drop chilled distribution
Typically not - the whole vehicle including the fridge body and refrigeration unit is financed as a single asset. If the fridge unit is replaced mid-life, we can discuss refinancing options.
What temperature ranges do lenders finance?
All commercial temperature ranges are financed: ambient, chilled (+2°C to +8°C), frozen (-18°C to -25°C), deep freeze. The operating temperature does not significantly affect finance terms.
What compliance is required for food transport?
Temperature-controlled food transport must comply with the European ATP agreement (or UK equivalent post-Brexit). Refrigerated vehicles must have an ATP certificate confirming the insulation standard. This is a compliance matter separate from finance.
Can I finance a pharmaceutical refrigerated truck?
Yes. Pharmaceutical cold chain (typically +2°C to +8°C, with tight temperature logging) is financed similarly to food fridge trucks. The compliance and equipment requirements are higher, which can affect the asset value used for finance.
