Contract hire (operating lease) provides a fixed monthly cost for the use of a truck, including optional maintenance, with no residual value risk for the haulier. At the end of the agreed term and mileage, the vehicle is returned. Contract hire is popular with large fleet operators who prefer budget certainty and do not want HGVs on their balance sheet.

Contract Hire vs Hire Purchase

HP: own the truck at the end; residual value risk is yours; lower monthly cost for comparable term; better for owner-operators who keep vehicles long-term.

Contract hire: return at end of term; lender carries residual risk; predictable cost; better for fleet operators who replace trucks regularly.

Most owner-operators and smaller hauliers use HP. Contract hire is more common in large fleet operations (25+ vehicles) run by logistics companies, supermarket supply chains and utilities.
